getting rid of the ignition barrel from a race loom 3EN2

Post by toosmooth »

Hiya FZR guru's

I want to get rid of the ignition barrel from the loom on my 3EN2 4/600

I bought this lovely illuminating rocker switch from Halfords which will sit nicely on some kind of plate in the space previously occupied by said barrel, question is, looking at the loom diagram for the FZR600 which the majority of this loom comes from, there are 2 switches contained in the ignition barrel - effectively 1 turns the ignition on, 1 turns the lights on. I have no lights (other than neutral, oil etc).

So knowing that it's probably the brown and red wires that I have to play with, I've now reached the end of my talent.

The red goes to the main fuse from the battery, the brown goes to the fusebox.

the new switch I have has 3 spade terminals

Positive, Earth and Load.

what the fuck do i do with this? what is load? where will it come from?

I am shit at electrics (at the moment - Haynes bike electrics manual ordered by end of week)

I've had the 600 switch apart but didn't pay much attention to the terminals.

Well the key has only one position but it has effectively two circuits running through it. short of keeping the switch you'll need the wiring diagram to find out where the other wires go to.

This is how I would sort it. Disconnect the battery. Cut all the wires close to the ign barrel. Strip 20mm of plastic off the the 2 fatest wires. Red & Brown ? Reconnect the battery. Twist the 2 wires together. Be careful not to earth these wires out. Check that your bike starts and runs as per normal. Untwist the wires. Use a test lamp to indicate which wire is the hot wire. It will probably be the red one. Connect the red wire to the positive terminal on the new switch. Connect the other wire to the load terminal. Find some wire and connect between the earth terminal and the bikes chassis. I dont run neutral & oil lights. If you are not really confident it might be best if you get someone to help as it could end in tears. Blown fuses, melted wiring loom , burnt bike. Good luck Pete

do you need to use the three terminals? the ignition only uses two wires at the point where it clips into the main loom so i recon you could just run the two wires from there and just test which two of the three are needed for it to work as a switch? if you link the two 'slots' in the red connector block to the ignition with a piece of wire the ignition comes on all you would be doing is adding a switch to that circuit then so all should work fine! I've got one similar to these on the race bike as it does ignition and start in one go! well thats about as clear as mud but i know what i meant! and doing it that way keeps the fuses etc in the circuit.

sounds dangerous.

i'm definitely up for that.

I'm getting the idea that this "negative earth" thing means that the entire frame of the bike forms the backside of the circuit.

This is because the battery is also connected to the frame and completes the circuit I presume? If I therefore were to run the earth on this rocker switch to something on the headstock or yokes, am I right to say the circuit would be in question because the current would have to run through the head bearings/grease and probably wouldn't get a good contact?

Electrics are one of the last great uncharted parts of my technical knowledge and I expect the smell of burning cable to accompany the next few months as I correct this situation!

thanks for your guidance on this...

my guess is the 3rd terminal makes the illuminated rocker switch illuminate, but I could be wrong...

Yes , the earth terminal is only there to illuminate the switch when switched on. If you are not worried about it illuminating , dont connect it.
