FZR400 EN2 - which ones the earth, positive and negative?

Post by uniquefzrfreak »

Can anyone tell me which cable is the pos, which is the neg and (I assume) which is the earth?

ok, my web space is shagged: picture bucket to the rescue!

http://s658.photobucket.com/albums/uu30 ... ywires.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm assuming the L shaped flat connector (with two wires coming off it) is the neg?

The one from the starter motor with the rubber surround is the pos?

The thinner short one with the O ring connector needs earthing to the frame or something?

Hoping to connect the battery tomorrow and see what blows up! - a little confirmation before hand would be cool.

Thanks in advance.

Yes you were spot on, the one with the cover is +ve and the L shape one is -ve. Regarding the small -ve it is suposed to earth to the frame, I have mine bolted down on one of the 2 bolts for holding the starter motor on. They fit the hole perfect.

Thanks Steve...

I connected them up and when I touched the covered connection to the battery +, the starter motor began turning over (regardless of what position I have the ignition or switch gear in!).

I'm not to good with electronics, but this doesn't surprise me as that wire goes back the to starter motor directly and I presume the starter motor is making a connection back to the - on the battery by the fact the starter is mounted on the engine and the main -ve from the L shaped connector is also earthed to the engine. Doesn't this effectively mean that the starter motor has a direct + and - path to the battery?

Surely there must be something in between somewhere to switch the current on/off to the starter? Perhaps in between the covered lead that currently goes form the starter motor chassis straight to the battery +. Is that correct?

I also have a red braided connector up near the round power valve servo plug, that isn't connected. It's a single spade connector. The fact it's braided red, makes me think this could also have something important to do. But I can't see how that would cause this problem.

The bike has no oil in at the moment, so having the starter automatically turning over (which I assume moves the crank and pistons up and down) seems a little risky.

The battery connects to the Solenoid and the solenoid to the starter

Thanks Evil! - that one was doing my head in. I tried to connect it again last night (with the M Max disconnected, don't ask why, but I didn't know what else to do) and I blew a chunk out of my battery + terminal.

...made a nice big spark though too!

If anyone has a solenoid for sale, I'm all ears? - or even if they can show me what one looks like.

you could have a glance at the manual .... the wiring diagram, maybe ;)

You can see the red (braided) wire comes from the battery, I think it's held onto the solenoid with a nut on a binding post the starter goes on the other. The solenoid is the round thing on the back of the battery box. There's a connector that links to the main keyed switch.

For the 3rd time in 24 hours, sincerely.. thank you!!! :worthy:

Sorry, wiring diagrams are like magic eye pictures to me - I just stare at them and see animal shapes!

That's put me back on the right path though, I'll hunt down a solenoid, join the coloured spaghetti up correctly and see if I have more luck.

Think of it like water in coloured pipes ... it only moves when a switch is open and then it runs to earth. All you need to do is join the the colours together ... an the other bits have coloured block conectors so they're easier
