which grade oil do i use?
ok..pardon me if this has been dealt with on here a million times already
but at the weekend, im gonna service the little nc30 for the first time. i have some quality fully synthetic oil in my garage that i bought for my last bike. it is graded at 10w50.
the haynes manual says that the bike should use 10w40. what is the difference and can i use the oil in my shed?

as abr said, fully synth in bikes not designed to it can be bad, in the case of the VFR's a lot of people (myself included) have had muchos clutch troubles with it slipping etc.
you can use 10/50 if you want but i wouldn't use what you have due to it being fully synth.

Likewise - I use a full-synth 10/40 and haven't had any clutch-slipping problems.Spike16 wrote:Iv got castrol 10/40w fully synthetic in my bike, and have never had a problem with the clutch sliping

Re: which grade oil do i use?
Full synthetic should be fine unless its described as a super lubricant/low friction.. Synthetics retain their viscosity ranges for longer than ordinary mineral oils, as the molecule chains break up slower

Other than psychological (bikes always seem to run better after a service, mind you this is sometimes true when you have dodgey plugs, filters etc)Spike16 wrote:Iv got castrol 10/40w fully synthetic in my bike, and have never had a problem with the clutch sliping

You probably wont notice any difference.
Cheapest oil (within reason) changed regularly will benefit your wallet and bike though. Usually 10/40 part synth :)
