shock spring removal

shock spring removal

I seem to be having trouble removing the spring from my shock absorber, according to the manual you compress the spring until the stopper ring can be removed from underneath the spring seat however when I do this the whole spring seat moves away from the bottom of the shock and does not allow access to the stopper ring so I am not even sure if my shock is broken or not,can anyone shed any light on this? Sorry I have no pics have tried to explain as best I can
