DIY custom fuel tank options? and how far will 4 litres go?

Post by uniquefzrfreak »

I've just cut the underside of my TCAT tank off, to make a TCAT shaped fake tank cover.

This won't fit over the stock FZR tank.

What would be safe options for a DIY fuel tank, i.e. could I use a 3 litre coke bottle? or a couple of ally drinks flasks etc? Maybe I could fit a couple of 2ltr nitro bottles on either side of the rad and fill them with petrol and wire them up to the fuel pump? - those bottles would probably cost to much though.

Also, can anyone tell me roughly how far 4 ltres would get me as that's probably about the size I can go to with a DIY jobby under the TCAT tank. I'm hoping it will be enough for runs down to the local pubs and bike meets.

I want to keep the bike light and I need the rest of the room under their for some other ideas that I have.

ridiculously I tried something similar just last week when I wanted a temporary tank to play about with the carbs.

The big problem getting juice out of a container that was never meant either for feeding out through a 6mm pipe or indeed petrol, is that modifying it to do both will inevitably end up with leaks, and even small leaks with petrol are at best smelly and at worst dangerous.

I'd consider giving it up as a bad job once you've discovered the same!

All sounds like dangerous bodges and I wouldn;t try to get it through a MOT.

Why not get an old battered tank off ebay from a smaller bike. Like a moped or 125 (usually about 9 litres). Rougher the better for price but it will have a proper filler cap (or at least a neck and a fuel tap

Better still, take the cover down to your local rough arse breakers and see what you can turn up.

Got to be a better bet surely?

4 litres will get you about 40 miles at road pace.

Yep, all fair and honest comments... Some guy on ebay builds them for projects for under a ton (just found his advert the other night), so I've sent him the dimensions and asked him to put the fuel outlet on the bottom.
