NC30 Fairings off - have a look and tell me what is wrong!

Post by dbanbery »

Took all the fairings off the bike today, and have uncovered a few issues i want to get to the bottom of/sort out. i alsop thought i'd let my bike bear all to you, so if theres anything you can pick out that isnt how it should be, then i can be told. All in all, its not too bad under there for a 1989 bike, but i want it to be better.
Image
1.i put a derestrictor box on it, but to be fair i didnt know whether it was restricted in the first place. is there anything that looks like a restrictor as well as the posh firm red box? it doesnt seem to run too differently.
Image
2.The fairing top bracket thingy is sheared on one side. it still works, but thats on my list of bits. £30 from Hing Kong off ebay? the Honda ones are £60!!!
Image
3. There seems to be quite a bit of tape in places, especially shown below.... what could be the reason for this? all the dials work as they should and the engine runs sweet. it does have heated grips but the tape i'm talking about is older than that, the grips have been on it less than a year.
Image
4. This box connector is shot. one of the wires isnt even connected. and the bike still runs with it like that fine. what is this box connector supposed to do?
Image

All in all though, it isnt too bad under there.. .bottom radiator looks fine, no fluid leaks. . .

any comments please post, i'm not in the business to be offended if it helps me sort it out so its right.

That connector with the 3 yellow wires looks like the altenator plug.

They burn out when you have knackered batteries on the bike and as the reg/rec starts to fail. It should be connected. You might have charging / battery problems (VFR's are notorious for charging issues) do a search for regulator on this forum and you'll have millions of results!

As for the limiter, you'll only notice when your going fast, if its working the bike wont go faster that 112mph.

Apart from that looks alrite :)

On a private road closed to the public i have seen 190km/h on the clock. its gone past 180 basically before i put the posh firm box on. it likes to tick over when cold more with the posh firm cdi on it though.

the pain in the ar$e with that connector is that both sides are knackered. i havent had any charging issues since i've had it [fingers crossed] and it doesnt get used all the time. AND it has the heated grips, which have been used a few times. [quite nice on a night when it gets a bit chilly]

i was advised by the previous owner to not use them on full for a long amount of time as it flattens the battery though.... like i said i havent had any problems.

cheers for the heads up and positive comments - are looms for these still available new?

It looks to be in normal/good condition to me??

1.) I have never heard of posh firm de-restriction modules, but if it works it appears to be fitted correctly and I can not see any other usual restriction bits fitted to the CDI.

2.) I have heard the Fairing/Screen stays from Hing Kong as you say, LOL are not a very good fit and often need to be bent out of shape to do there job properly. The things are £30 cheaper for goodness sake, theres bound to be something wrong with it? Honda dont spend Millions researching parts and materials if it could be done cheaper...

3.) Tape. Dont worry about it. 90+% of the wiring loom is covered in tape as it comes out the factory. Its just there to help shroud and protect the wires a bit. If anything, a bit more tape wouldnt hurt to keep the wires clean and tidy.
You should however, be a bit cautios as to wether the tape has been put on there to hide a flaw in the wires. Perhaps removing certain areas of tape and checking the wires would be helpful, and then simply re-tape the wires afterwards.

4.) Without looking closer at my NC30's, I am unable to accurately tell you what that plug is for. However, it should be connected and in good condition to get the best out of your bike and longevity etc. See if you can repair the connector and clean the wires up a little bit, if not replace the plug with a second hand one off ebay. Unfortunately this isnt as easy as it sounds...

As for running differently with the Posh Firm box off/on. I would of thought this could be down to the jets in the carburettors. They may have been adjusted to match the Exhaust and De-restrictor box simultaneously, and by removing the Box you are affectively changing the input to the jets. So I wouldnt of thought this would be a great thing to worry about. Just find which way it seems to run best and keep it like it. LOL

Hopefully, this will help you a little bit...

just to note that the Posh box does sod all apart from remove the 112mph restriction.

With your generator plug I'd be worried that the alternator windings are looking in a similar state and get it checked out. I had a plug like that, no charging and batteries, reg rec and windings all gone west...

Only thing i noticed is that you dont have any of the rubber rings that go around the headlights and block the gap in the front fairings

Headlamp rubbers - i do have those, i took them off when the front fairing came off.

i dont think there are charging issues, but i'll check it out when i get chance.

surely a HONG Kong [LOL] fairing stay will be better than the current one. what do they fetch second hand? i begrudge paying £60 for what effectively a few bits of metal welded together - not exactly engineering genius is it? i agree with what you say, however it wouldnt suprise me if i had to bend an OE one either.

i have noticed on a few bikes when i was looking for one to buy that the wiring loom had tape on it, i put it down to a desrestrictor being fitted, but on getting one and learning where what was underneath, it didnt make sense.

to be fair, with both sides of the wiring shot i might just chop out the box and bullet connector them - less of a faff and more reliable than trying to bugger about with putting a box connector on shorter wires.

cheers for the info, makes me feel good that i bought one that isnt too bad, as i was worried that i'd take the fairing off and everything would fall apart in my hands!
