I bought a good complete 400 or and the guts out of a crashed 600.

The way you suggest requires a lot of selling to get back the initial outlay.

Mine was finished with 600 motor and R6 shock for £1000

Cheers plodder, I like the sound of finished article for around £1000 - I'll keep looking for a nice 400 (with standard bodywork) and then source the engine/loom/carbs/ecu/etc and go from there.

I paid under £300 for my crashed foxeye with approx 20,000 miles on it. Got all the bits i needed and a load of stuff still sitting in the garage.

As for the 3tj i spent about the same but have spent the last year or so aquiring bits for it.

If i was to do it (when i do it) again i would definately invest more in the 400.

Things to look out for on the 400 for you would included decent bodywork, the top fairing is a bugger to find and tanks (in good conition) aren't easy ... although I've got a good replacement but in the wrong colours for mine.
You might find one with rotten down pipes that soebody wants shot of, they're usually cheap.

Right then, does anyone know years that cover the Fzr600 4jh foxeye model? I'm looking for a suitable donor bike for the conversion. Looking at the thundercats they are considerably more expensive. There have been several suitable 3tj's on the bay but they are all so far away! I don't mind travelling to be honest after all I've got a nice van but I think I'll keep looking as its only been about a week since I've seriously been considering the conversion. Does anyone know how much Mr Oolitt (have I spelt that right?) charges for the R6 shock linkage thingy. Also does anyone offer up the mounting plates for sale or is it a matter of making up my own? I'd rather use a tried and tested fitting kit. otherwise I'd have to draw up the plans and my mate the aerospace engineer would do the machining (as he does for the Ducati fitting kits I supply for the Nc30's). Sorry for all the questions, thanks Paul.

There's only on Foxeye model also known as thr FZR600R so you should be ok with that.
FZRTim might have a pattern for the top plates but it's not to difficuly to do as there are 6mm spacers between the 3TJ engine and frame. The one thing is the bolts are a fine thread countersunk (I think) m8 bolts

The foxeye was sold in the '94/'95 model years, crashed ones do occasionally come up on the bay for not a lot of cash. Mine was £325.

The bolts are metric fine countersunk M10, easy to find when you know where to look! Unfortunately, the only place I found that sold them was ProBolt, they are titanium and 5 quid a pop! :o

But what's £20 when the bike is costing somewhere in the region of a grand....

I have some plates ready to fit. They are countersunk ready to bolt to the engine but require drilling/tapping where the engine lines up with the frame. £10 inc post.
Had a bit of an issue with the last set i supplied to plodder. He removed 6mm of the left hand side where the plates mount the engine so that when the engine was offered into the frame it was propperly centered. The issue was that there was not enough material on the plate to line up with the holes in the frame. The issue was rectified by making a plate the mirror of the right hand side one.
I havent yet done the modification of removing 6mm from the left hand engine mounts to see if this was a one off thing but will be doing so shortly.
