Gear problem

Post by christ044 »

Hi guys, dont know if anyone can help but iv got a slight problem with the gears on my NC24.

Got it running earlier this week (front pipe blowing, but we can sort that out!) so today i thought right lets take it for a quick spin round the block and then sort out an mot for her. Bike's sat on the drive warming up, in neutral, put my helmet on, selected first gear and off we go, didnt want to thrash it so changed into second at about 6000 rpm, then up to third, started to slow down for a junction at the end of the road and popped it back a gear, pulled up and tried to select first gear, first gear gear wasn't there neither was neutral, having heard people say they can be a right pig to select neutral whilst the engine is running i moved to the side of the road and shut off the engine to try and find neutral, no joy at all.

So now iv got a bike that selects second through to sixth (checked this with the engine running and clutch in) but no first or neutral gears!

Any ideas on what might have gone wrong and how to put it right?

So right now it is stuck in gear and you have the clutch it to push it around?

Have you had the rearsets and gear linkaes off the bike? It is hard ot change gear without the bike either rolling or the clutch out slightly. try paddling forwards with motor off and then give it a good clunk and see if it engages..

I know NC30 are bastards for getting neutral sometimes but it normally is in there somewhere.

Is the chain too tight? Is the clutch adjusted properly etc?

Yeah it wheels ok with the clutch in, with the engine running i can get every gear but not first, just tried it in the garage pushing back and forth and changing gear, it goes through the gears from second to sixth no problem, but just wont go below second gear.

The clutch does bite towards the end of the lever, would that cause a problem?

Strange one..

Have the gear linkages been moved or fiddled with since you rebuilt the moto?

Does it make the movement to push the gear in or is it unable to complete the "throw" of the gear lever?

clunk? spongy feeling? what does it do?

It is going to be either a simple fix..or a real ballache :o

NO..you were just testing out a race shift pattern.that's all ;)

Why not try it for a while...I used it and would not want to go back now.

I am also smug that if any scabby chav tried to ride my bike away it would not go very far before it stalled when trying to pull off in 6th..lol

Glad it was sorted :ugeek:

Iv tried when i had my RGV mate, but too many years riding bikes with the gears the way they are and i could see a blown engine!

Thanks for the help, just to sort out some header pipe gaskets and then off and running (mind you they dont half go well!!)

They sure do.. you done the valve clearances?

I've not long been back from taking my rothmans NC24 out for a spin, as it was mot'd this morning.

Been laid up over xmas but I spent some time and overhauled the carbs, brakes, valve clearances and now its like an exocet missile.

From 10,500rpm to the redline it's insane in every gear :D

Feels much quicker than the NC35

Standard 15/45 sprockets and std tyres too, albeit with heavier fork oil and decent rear shock.

I did the valve clearences while the engine was out the frame.

I have created myself another problem though, the rear headers are blowing, I want to nip them up to see if that sorts it out, is there anyway of doing this without taking the engine back out?
