RVF breaking down

I am having problems with my bike again. it will start fine and ride for around 7 - 10 miles , it seems to lose power and cut out, if i try and start it it just cranks over and only fires occasionally, leave it 5 mins go back and it starts again go for about another mile or so and same again, i have balanced the carbs and cleaned the fuel filter and tap seems to be working fine, regulator was changed last year. any ideas??

Vacuum hose? Might have a split when it gets hot or it is collapsing in the heat..starving the bike.

Have checked vacuum hose, no signs of any splits but could be collapsing, i`ll get a new one an give it a try, thanks

have you changed the fuel cap?
i damaged the original cap on mine and got a 2nd hand vfr cap and had to drill two small holes in it to act as a breather as it caused the tank to airlock.

its easy to find - open your fuel cap, place a clean rag over the revealed hole ant lightly tape it down making sure air can easily get into the tank and then take your bike out for a run.

No its the original fuel cap. One other thing I just remembered is when its idling its popping out of exhaust. Will check those above first though. Thanks

when it dies is it bogging right down.....almost like running out of fuel?

the backfiring indicates unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust system so its either running really rich or periodically losing the spark and getting back.the problem may lie with the float bowls,check the level,and the condition and make sure no parts are goosed.

It does seem like lack of fuel, i have just checked ignition timing and spot on, vacuum pipe is replaced although it was fine and all hoses clean and free on the fuel tank.

i have just been out on it after doing timing broke down twice although the first time it did keep running but was only on 2-3 cylinders, second time it seems as though out of fuel but when it dies if you leave for 5 mins it will start up and run fine for about 1/2 mile then same again,

if it was the fuel is low in float chambers would it need to crank over to fill up? just wondered if was that why it fire up after a few mins of stopping?

when it runs out try opening the tank to see if air rushes in,you might have a blocked tank breather

did that this afternoon, breather pipe is clear from the tank, when the lid is opened no air gets sucked in

remove your carbs and blow them out with an air line (via the fuel feed) youd be could suprised.

i checked pilot and main jets and cleaned the float bowls (i was having a similar prob).
when i hooked it up to the airline it blew fuel all over me and my mates garage but it worked.
ive heard of people getting a hair in the carb and that was enough to fuck up the fueling.

give it a go - it cant hurt.
