'91 FZR400RRSP with red tail panels - why?

Post by tristanbadger »

I just acquired a reasonably stock '91 FZR400RRSP (Japanese grey import into Australia), and it has red panels on the tail.

Photos on the net mostly show black panels which match the area around the headlight, although I do think I saw one with red panels.

Why do you think mine looks like it does - aftermarket bodgery, Japanese domestic spec, '91 year variant from 1990, or other? I'm not convinced the tail section is original.

I figured if anyone is going to know, you people will. Thanks in advance.

It's probably been replaced or one of the owners thought they'd be different.

Not to sure if the pink frame gaurds are standard either :)

theres a chap over at the rgv250.co.uk forums that has just done some replacement number boards/tail stickers for mine - and a lot cheaper than the yam versions and just as good!
should you want them that is.....

If it came to that, I'd just head down to the supermarket and buy some matte black Contact (the adhesive vinyl often used for covering kids' school books), cut out a newspaper template to the same shape, then cut and left and right panel out of Contact and stick it on. Hey presto, instant OEM look for $3.99.

Did I mention I'm cheap?

They've also fiddled about with the engine internals - the valve springs aren't SP coloured, so who knows what the rest of it is...

Still, as long as it rolls along propelled by burning petrolchemicals, I'm not too fussed.
