weird headlight problem

Post by Talon »

the bike just randomly picked up a fault a few weeks ago, need to get it fixed now because its going for mot.

the sidelights work fine, but when you go to main beam it stays on sidelight. full beam still works fine if you push the button in. now obviously i need a main beam.

any ideas?

Strip and clean the switchgear - lots of WD should see it right

have you removed the bulbs and visually inspected the element?

the bulb could have blown, but full beam would still work.

exactally as the boys said. had the same problem a few weeks ago on the ZX6.
i took out the bulb and fuses, both fine.
i took the switchgear and all connector blocks for the lights and drenched them in contact cleaner, then a water repellant (some muc off stuff) and worked a treat.
i didnt actually see any dirt per se, but it fixed it, so i'm happy

What happens if you go from dipped to main? it does sound like the bulb has gone on the dipped element.

make yourself a jumper wire, get a piece of wire and bare it at each end!!!!

remove the block connector coming from the switchgear and the side going to the lights start to bridge the terminals....

try different combinations and your lights will start to work.if your main beam works this way then you know for sure the switchgear is faulty.
