camshaft gear shimming

hi, im just rebuilding an engine for my nc35.the head has been skimmed to raise the compresion and the silenceing gears removed.i know the gears need to be shimmed up to allow for the head being skimmed, iv also been told that removing the gears affects the backlash on the gears due to the tension being removed. the thing is what is the correct backlash or clearance and how would i measure it. any help would be much appreciated.thanks nolie

I have the silencing gears removed from my track bike, apparently they haven't been adjusted as it makes a fair clatter now.

Try contacting member 'RVF', it was Stephen that explained it all a while ago I think.

thanks stickshift, i looked for any posts on the subject before i asked.i looked again and found the thread you told me about,its on page 10 today,nov24 if anyone intrested. i hope i can see feeler gauges beter than i can find topics on here how much use has your bike had since the gears were removed,if youv had no probs it could be more a noise thing. spose it depends if and how much the heads are skimmed

when we had the heads and block skimmed on mine all we did was shim where the cams mount and the centre gears, sorry my technical speak isn't the greatest.

It hasn't seen much use since a full rebuild, the rebuild was done by a bloke who's familiar with V4's (used to run aussie RC30 race teams).

I agree that it's the 'budget' version of removing them by not adjusting for backlash but I doubt it will do any damage, at least not before it's due for another rebuild.

works for me mate ! i think iv been tryin to hard to get it right and iv got bogged down in the details! i just want an engine to last so i can enjoy riding it instead of rebuilin it. iv a mate whos 35 has done 3 mgp s a nw200 and a string of irish races an hes never even had to adust the valve shims,just changes the oil an plugs,other bikes cant even do 3 laps of aintree without blowin to peices. iv studied the results and realised that red bikes are faster but blow up all the time and blue bikes are a bit slower but last forever. im gonna get some paint an spray the top half red an the bottom half blue an see if that works.
