UK spec bandit 400 ignition coil wiring

Post by reggit »

Can someone tell me how the coils are wired on a UK spec bandit 400 (non-VVT)

I used an import wiring diagram and I can get the bike to cough and pop back through the carbs, however on swapping the LT feeds to the coil, the same happens suggesting that at least some of my HT leads are on the wrong cylinders. It was all pulled apart when I got the bike, so I'd nothing to go off.

What colour wires feed the left and right coils, and which coils feed which plugs.

Hope you can understand all that.
Cheers.

Have a look on this topic: http://www.400greybike.info/newforum/vi ... &sk=t&sd=a
My bandit4 is an import, but the wiring diagrams I got are off Germany, US & Canada models! I would've thought that the UK coils would be connected the same!?
When the mind is relaxed, the body will go faster! 8-)

Thanks for that link, very useful. I can immediately see that the coils are reversed on mine, and the white wire is green!

I'll do some more fiddling with it tomorrow.

OK, I've now swapped the coils and wired it as per the diagram in the thread, however I've no change in running condition (ie is doesn't). It will occasionally cough, but pops back through the carbs still.
I have fuel and spark at all 4 plugs.

I did replace the motor with an unit from an import bike, I'm clutching at straws now, but is the CDI unit different on an import than a UK bike?

My CDI is marked;
32900-10060
BB7258

If someone would be kind enough to look at theirs I'd be grateful.

I now think I've sussed that it's the CDI my bike's not happy with as the replacement motor is from a 1989 bike, I think it needs a 1989 CDI unit.

Cheers.

HI,
The cdi part N0. you give is for a P model 93 bandit, the M/N model have N0.32900-10D00
There are some differences with the jap motor being with them being electricaly resrtricted, if youve still got the old motor it maybe worth changing the leftside cover with the original pickup and the gear selector sensor as this is used to tell the jap bikes when to restrict, the uk bike had 6 wires to the cdi where as the jap has 7 wires. Ive only got a jap VV so am unable to compare but this may help you a bit. If the cdi is good i think you should be able to use it with a little work!

That's useful, thank for the tips re: pickups etc. I do still have all this stuff, so will swap them over.

I've sussed out that the early 400, has a totally different CDI unit with 2 connectors on flyleads. I've bought one of these and will make a section of loom to connect it into the original loom.

The bike is a '93 btw.

Before you swap it all over just change over the starter clutch and pickup ring that the pickup coil senses with.

I was thinking about if that'd work whilst I was bored at work today.

Hi Mike, do you think the trigger is different?

If you get it sorted let us know what changes you had to do as ive go a spare/broken VV motor that i want to change to standard so any help is good, the high speed cam rocker arms on the VV are a bit fragile and can brake when used hard so back to normal.

I'd put money on the trigger being different.
