1989 NC30 refurb project

Post by Haydn »

Hi everyone,

Thought i’d share what i’ve been up to over the last few weeks.

I bought back my old 1989 NC30 track bike. I sold it in 2014 to a good friend, he did 2 track days and then it’s been sat in his garage since (with the old fuel ☹️).

Anyway, I decided to set a budget and bring this thing back to life with the plan to do my first track day in 9 years next month.

The bike is an ex-race bike but i’ve only ever used it for track days.

First job was to strip the carbs again, replace the pilot jets and clean everything else up with new seals. She started first time and is running well so far. Once I knew I had a running bike I started ordering parts. Parcels have been flying in from eBay and Rick Oliver and she’s nearly there now. Just need to send the wheels off to be powder coated white tomorrow and have the new tyres fitted. I went with Rick Olivers advice for an 18” rear wheel bike and went with a 140/60/18 in a Bridgestone BT50 R and a 120/60/17 Bridgestone S21 up front. The rear looks thin and the tyre wall shallow so I will lose a bit of height. Will take it easy and see how it feels.

Here’s the spec of the bike for those interested and a few pictures.

Total loss ignition - Race loom, no fan or ancillaries.
520 conversion, Renthal sprockets 14-42 and Regina Chain.
Progrip race grips.
Gibson/ART end can.
Alloy Race rear sets.
Braided front brake lines.
Carbs fully rebuilt. New jets, floats set, sliders drilled to 2.5mm, 1mm needle washers, new gaskets and o rings.
New OEM air filter.
Intake flap re-installed.
Brakes overhauled.
Valve clearances checked and re shimmed.
Morris race 10w40 oil & K&N filter.
Morris Race supercool coolant.
Nitron R1/Sport rear shock with 900lbs spring. 10mm longer, gives 45mm extra ride height at rear.
Rear linkage overhauled and greased.
Rick Oliver fork upgrade kit with 0.9kg/mm linear springs and HLX 10 fluid.
Rick Oliver Alloy screen stay.
Rick Oliver Alloy clock bracket.
Airblade double bubble screen.
New easy glide choke cable.
Race fuel cap.
Rear subframe shortened.
HRC coolant overflow bottle.
Race high flow radiators.
Lithium Iron battery.

Either going to keep it green with a slight change or paint in OEM colours for an 1989 K model. See my works of art below 🤔
