Re: NC30 Carb Balancing trickery.
They are not all that expensive;
http://www.spectools.com/spec.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Although the carbtune one has a lot longer handle.
I use one of these and a 7mm socket;
http://www.ratchet-tool.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A bit fidlier as you need to switch direction of the ratchet if you overshoot the adjustment but a bit more versatile for other jobs.
If I was buying something from scratch again I would buy one of these;

Re: NC30 Carb Balancing trickery.
why did you try and take the brass nipple off the number 3 carb ?trademe900 wrote:Hey royster81 thanks for the help and pics. Thanks to that i've now found the points and have attached my gauges. Ran into some difficulty as the tank vacuum tube broke when trying to take it off number 3 carb. god knows how i managed to get the remaining bit off. Just waiting for my air filter to dry out and get it all back together to see if it works!royster81 wrote:once you find the 4 screws come on back and let us know if you get stuck at anything else
I don't have a special screw driver or anything... so i'll have to go out and get one today. i noticed though... probably going to need a fucking gigantic screw driver to get to those adjustment screws. How do you guys get in there? from the right hand side of the V with some gloves on ???
could you not have used the rubber hose attached to the nipple and ran it straight into the vacuum guages ?
when it comes to putting it back on (and you will need it for the fuel tap) it's easier to do with the carbs off.
i think there are only a few on the site that have used the vacuum guages to balance the carbs and most either do it by eye or use the 1mm drill bit trick,and since you need to get the carbs off anyway you could try and do them by eye and see how close you can get them and just finishe it off with the guages

Re: NC30 Carb Balancing trickery.
Isn't there a way of balancing the carbs using a drill bit? As i dont have a set a vacuum gauges, i remember on the old forum there was a guide. Does anyone still have a copy of it please?

search it on the old forum,i think you can get to it via a link in one of the top sections on the main page or throw CRM's profiletom wood wrote:Isn't there a way of balancing the carbs using a drill bit? That's the only way I've ever done it, always with great results.tom wood wrote:Isn't there a way of balancing the carbs using a drill bit? As i dont have a set a vacuum gauges, i remember on the old forum there was a guide. Does anyone still have a copy of it please?
I've no doubt it's as accurate as the vacuum guage method, but only 5% of the effort and tools needed (can do it with the carbs off)!
Basically all you're doing is adjusting the throttle butterflies to be open the same amount, whereas the vacuum method will take into account cylinder flow differences, etc. Not much difference in it.
I would have to have a gun to my head to even pick up a 90 degree screwdriver...

Re: NC30 Carb Balancing trickery.
After i borrowed this incredibly impressive 90 degree screwdriver it still seemed near on impossible to get to the screws and adjust them. Only after nearly another hour of practice and poking through different sections of piping and wiring, squinting eyes and killing my back to turn these screws, was i ready to do the real work.
Turned motor on, let it warm up till normal running temperature... got someone to read out the gauges whilst i tried to turn these screws. After about 15 mins I got them all perfect. It was so cool to hear the bikes engine tone change slightly and become smoother and more crisp!
Another hour to bolt her back up and get rid of the gauges and took her for a spin:
Immediately noticed less vibration (not to say it wasn't smooth before) , like through your seat and legs and hand you just feel it's that much more smooth. Didn't expect this.
More low end power- definately noticeable at speed limit or below... shit loads more mid range.
Smoother sound for sure as well..
definately worth it!
I can honestly say that the bike has never shifted like that before... feels like this is what it was supposed to be like when it came out the factory.
thumbs up!
valve clearance next- i think a lot easier than this monkey business!
thanks all.

Re: NC30 Carb Balancing trickery.
I’m interested in this as I’ve got my fairings off at the moment so would be silly not to balance the carbs as it seems to "hunt" at idle, so I presume they’re not in sync.royster81 wrote:search it on the old forum,i think you can get to it via a link in one of the top sections on the main page or throw CRM's profiletom wood wrote:Isn't there a way of balancing the carbs using a drill bit? I’ve searched for CRM's posts but only found the 10page topic on valve clearances and not carbs.
I’ve a set of the morgantune mercury gauges but a drill bit seems much easier and quicker!

Re: NC30 Carb Balancing trickery.
i have recently been playing about with the butterfly valves and have herd of lots of ways to balance them.
1, the exceptionally small drill bit method
2. the backing light method
3. the fill the intakes with carb cleaner method
the backing light method worked a charm for me

Re: NC30 Carb Balancing trickery.
it just involves taking the carbs off the bike, then turn the carbs over and place the carb trumpets over a light source.
then close the butterflies fully, then slowly turn the screw to open up the butterfly stooping when the light source gently begins to shine through
