Well, looks like in this case it was the CDI. Got my replacement from the UK this afternoon, plugged it in and instantly had spark again. Felt confident enough to run some fuel through it, so hooked up the aux bottle, and lo and behold it started.

Today has been by far the most that it's run since I got it. Had it off and on all afternoon while I was fiddling with the carbs. Fingers crossed, might put the tank on tomorrow and take if for it's first ride around the block.

Great news. I am always interested in examining faulty electrics. Where are you located, would you be interested in posting the suspect TCI to me. It maybe repairable and I could return it to you.
