FZR400RR poor handling
My FZR handles quite badly, very reluctant to turn it, I know its been retrofitted with an R6 shock. Is this a standard modification, I'm wondering if its been done wrong?

Check the tyre pressures.
The R6 shock is known mod, they have an extension piece at the bottom but are known to be quite hard as standard.
First thing though are the tyres ... If I haven't done the pressures for a while I can feel the steering get heavy.

Re: FZR400RR poor handling
Ok mate thank you I will do that, do you know what the pressures should be for the 3TJ? Also just noticed I have a Michelin on the front and a much older pirelli on the back so may need to change that. So the R6 shock should make any difference other than a harder ride?

It shouldn't be detrimental. Different tyre makers have slightly different pressures so drop onto a website .. Try 34 front 36 rear (on road) if youre stuck but check the website

It would be well worth checking your head bearings and front wheel bearings.

Re: FZR400RR poor handling
Do you know what the spring rate is on the R6 shock? I've read posts on the FZRonline.com forum that the stock spring rate on a R6 shock is a lot different from a stock FZR400 spring. On my 1WG I ended up with a spring rate of 850 lbs/inch. You could get some idea of whether the spring is in the ballpark by checking sag (free sag and rider sag)

I don't know the r6 spring rate. It might be in the R6 specs.

Re: FZR400RR poor handling
I'll slowly get round to checking it all out. Still trying to learn about the bike. Much more complicated than my little two strokes

Re: FZR400RR poor handling
It's just different, they're not so complicated, strokers are a bit lighter and the engine feel is different

Re: FZR400RR poor handling
3TJ rear shock runs a 6.0kg/mm rear spring. R6 2C0 used a 10kg/mm spring. I'm in the process of trying to workout what spring to use on the gold valved 2C0 shock I have at TW at the moment. Also depending on use front forks are V soft. stock springs are 0.65kg/mm. I weight 62kg and ran 0.725kg/mm on an RS250 which is a lot lighter than a 3TJ so plotted a graph of bike weight against fork spring weight for every race bike I've had and the extrapolated to get 0.78kg/mm springs for a 151kg bike. This made it good enough to win a couple of F400 races. I've also go Kayla's multi-position jack-up dogbones and am on the 3rd tallest set up out of the 4 options. This makes it turn better and seems ok for rear grip even though I run the back wheel right at the back of the swing arm (only way the 5.25" dymag and 180/60 tyre fits and even then its about 1.4mm to the swing arm and 1.2mm to the chain!)Evilchicken0 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2018 8:50 pmI don't know the r6 spring rate.
