Spraying starter fluid into the intake tract while cranking is a great way to confirm that the air and spark part are working. It bypasses everything involved in the fuel delivery. If the bike lights up easily on an intake spray of starter fluid you know that your problem is fuel delivery.

You could unplug the headlight to reduce electrical system draw during this test.

Thanks - was able to get it fired up after charging the battery. The battery came with the bike and I have no history on it. It ran ok - great over 4k. Feels like it's missing under 4k. Has a very "partial" exhaust note, almost sounds like a high revving thumper under 4K (but above idle).

One step at a time.

Just bringing this to a close. My issue was the battery. Replaced it and have been zipping around since!

Well I'm back to square 1. Hope someone is following along still to help out.

Bike runs fantastic when started. Idles well. Pulls to redline hard. I'm on a 35# pilot jet with the fuel screw 2 turns out. Carbs just cleaned thoroughly including ultrasonic cleaning jets. Bike will bump start quickly every single time.

Problem: takes forever to start on the button. Full choke, just turns the starter over for 20 seconds or so then just randomly fires right up. I can't figure it out.

Coils pass testing, spark is nice and fat. Once the bike is running it's a champ and shows no problems.

Battery is new, full charge.

Any ideas? Is this potentially a stator problem?

Your B4 is a U.S. model which means the headlight comes on the moment you key-switch to "ON". This was a U.S. DOT requirement. All other models of the B4 have a headlight switch on the right handlebar.

Just as a quick and easy experiment you should disconnect the headlight plug and try starting the bike. See if that improves things.

I will do this - just read back through and overlooked the first time you told me to do this...

I was going to plug the battery up overnight but I'll try this first. If no luck, I'll try the battery charge + no headlight.

SevenThreeSeven, you're too dang good :)

Battery hasn't been charged in a couple months but I unplugged the light and boom, fired right up no choke. Do I have a stator problem? Wonder if switching to an LED headlight would help.

I modified my B4, that's how I dealt with the DOT stupidity.

I searched around and found FastEddy Sports in the U.K., they have produced a plug-n-play modification that keeps the headlight off when you key-switch the bike to "ON". The headlight stays off while you start up the bike and then when you want the headlight to come on you flip the headlight switch to High-beam then back to Low-Beam. After that the headlight will operate normally, low-beam and high-beam.

It works with the B4 because it's designed to work with an H4 Headlight bulb, which the B4 uses. The FastEddy Sports people originally developed this modification for the early fuel injected Triumph motorcycles which were very hard to start due to battery draw.

No, you don't have a stator problem.
