A project

I picked this NC29 up last weekend and it is dog rough,used as daily transport and fettled to suit,read fettled as bodged/adapted/made do to keep it on the road,which as a hack is I suppose acceptable.I bought it as a project and for "play" use not a commuter.I think the pictures say it all,when I bought it he said the wheels are white....



..and after a wash,

I think you can tell when someone has lost interest when they don't even bother to present it in an endearing light,which always allows a fair bit of bartering.The visual state is representative of the overall state which I've discovered while stripping it...

The urm wheels have come up well.

The good,the bad and the ugly...so far;-

The good/:-Starts and runs well.Yoshimura exhaust.Adjustable levers.K&N.Recent battery,regulator and fuel pump.Rear sets.Good tyres.Chain and sprox good.Braided hoses f&r.

The bad/:-Wrong colour(colour code).Damaged fairings with cable ties holding it together.Worn out front brakes.Wrong connectors used on fuel pump relay(?).Abused close to death.

The ugly/:-Pads worn so low they've damaged the discs(2.5mm and 2.8 mm).Strange rear-set set up?



I appreciate as a "hack" it would be prone to abuse but as you can see the pads were well used,the seller told me it would need new discs.Everything about it screams help me,I think the owner had no choice but to spend money or stop riding it,as the disc's grinded whilst being pushed.....the connectors on the fuel pump (relay?) were the wrong size so the wire didn't go into the metal part of the crimp and were held in by the plastic covers which parted company as I removed the tank.A standard plethora of cable ties held the fairings on,at least it wasn't devastating interference fit wood screws,most of the panels are recoverable.The rear-sets were set at such an angle it was almost impossible to get into gear,the gear box selector rod was almost horizontal pointing forwards as was the rear-set selector rod,a quick adjustment sorted that,also the rear-sets on each side were set at different positions???I suppose some people just don't ...
Am I disappointed...hell no....just thought I'd enlighten you to my project woes....

..oh yeah 1 key for each lock...
I have made good progress,I've replaced the worst panel,subframe blasted and powder coated,the key set,rear seat,pads,discs (on the way),screen (on the way),oil and filter
Some pretty decals and replaced all the fittings where possible...TBH it's been busy but it's coming together nicely now.

..and an improvised front lift.it may look dodgey but once balanced correctly it is quite solid...
Just waiting on the new screen,I'll fit the plastics on sunday..

Good one, you seem to be putting the hours in. An ABBA stand is good for what your doing but I admit I used to use the trolly jack the same way but I now have the front wheel lift add on from ABBA. Its sad that owners run pads down like that, causes more cost in the long run. In case your wondering if anyones following this. I am following this thread even though I dont answer, sadly the cbr forum is a lot quieter these days than it used to be.

Mot failure:-
Drive chain showing excessive wear.
Head bearings excessive freeplay.
Steering control fouling.

Advisory;-
Drive sprocket worn.
Grabbing front brake(light).
Front tyre close to limit.

The clucth cable is hitting the speedo,adjusting will sort this.I've ordered new chain/sprox.The head bearings showed up on the way to the mot and combined with the bad front tyre it was perilous to ride. I opted to buy a pair of tyres as the rear isn't also great.And some head bearings.New rear pads and overhaul as that seemed poor although it passed.The front tyre has almost worn to a point...

The polishers favourite..Autosol..it makes light work of faded metals with minimal effort..suits me.....
