3tj how to retard ignition?

Post by Mark-091 »

Just wondering anyone would be able to tell me how to go about retarding the ignition 2 degrees on a 3tj? have seen it mentioned before in a few posts.

Many thanks

The timing is taken off the flywheel and the pickup is mounted on the crankcase behind it, under the alternator cover.
There are 3 ways I think it can be done:
First alter the flywheel position using a cranked woodruff key, you'll need to heat the flywheel to get it off.
Second move the pickup, it's on a plastic mount so I guess it's possible to cut and shut or cast a new piece for it.
Third - for racing - BDK make an adjustable timing system for the 3TJ, but it works on a total loss system and replaces the flywheel and alternator windings. I think they also make a system to provide a charge but I don't have any details or if it fits a 3tj.

Hi, thanks for the reply mate, I understand just not sure the best way to do it, BDK plate just advances and I've never heard of the offset key for a 3tj. Not sure how much to offset the pickup as its on the cover so hard to adjust in relation to rotor, how much offset = how many degrees etc.

I think the most positive way would be the offset key but probably the hardest to install.
Take a look at the pickup and how it mounts, it shouldn't be to difficult to make up a plate and mount the pickup on that. I'd assumed a timing degree was 1 degree of 360 on the flywheel which could be physically measured.

You might be able to use a Dynatek cdi from a bigger engine Yamaha, maybe they do one for the FZR1000 RU, I'd assume they use the same system with the pickup in a relatively similar position. Dynatek cdi's have a couple of ignition curves and one programmable one, they're usually used for turbo tuning though. I had a kit for a GSXR1100W but couldn't get it plumbed into the engine, it ran on 2 but I couldn't get the pickups to line up properly
