Pods eh, somebody gave up on the airbox rubbers then.
Find an airbox and fit a K+N

Its running a 600 engine, I thought fitting an airbox was difficult in the 400 frame / tank

The 3HE 600 engine uses the same airbox as the 400. The barrels are slightly higher so the airbox can make the tank shroud tight.

I reckon by the time one fooks about buying pods, then making a stand off inlet tract for them which apparently makes them tuneable and buying jets it is much more economical to use the original airbox BUT with new carb rubbers.
The old rubbers are the reason most airboxes are ditched...not the space issues.

The filler cap ring is slightly higher (thicker) on a 600 but otherwise identical to a 400 unit.
This once caused me no end of bother fitting a 3EN2 tank setup back together using std tank and shroud till I worked it out.
I wonder if the extra height could be utilised to get the metal tank cover to fit better with the 600 engine ?

The cap has to fit BOTH flush with the cover ring and into the tank to lock though.

We the pods are cheap crap and falling apart so new airbox bought.

Would it be better to turn some delrin on my lathe to raise the tank and shroud by a couple of mill to give the box some air to breathe too?

Be prepared to renew the carb rubbers.

There is enough space for the air to get to the inlet without spacing the tank cover.

Taper the ends of the two long fixing screws that go through the cap surround and into the tank with a grinder
so as they catch the threads first time rather than forcing them in X threaded.

Selling the rd stuff has released some much needed runs for a 160 rear conversion.

Bagged a trx swingarm.

What's the build components?

TRX swingarm pivot?

FZR 600 or trx wheel?

Shock linkage, which one?

Caliper?

If you use a 600 3he engine you should be able to just drop it in. You could run it on the 400 cdi, loom etc but it's easier to use the 600 cdi (it will have the red line for the 600 so you won't ove rev it). You will need the 600 downpipes and the carbs (because it's easier to buy the carbs than retune the 400 ones). You'll see it this thread the fan is on the outside of the rad, this is because the 600 downpipes will foul the bottom of the rad, I've heard of using computer fans (12v) on the rad as well.

R6 callipers are nice because they're monoblock so have less flex in them than the originals, using EBC HH pads will sharpen things up a bit more. Wavey discs on there own won't really add anything, it's the disc material and condition that makes the difference. If the discs are thin and scored on these bikes they're feeling and performance is poor.
