GK76a Dreaded O-Rings

Post by jtmurphy92 » Wed Dec 12, 2012 10:13 pm

I've now read so much about these o rings im debating whether to just whip out the carbs right now and do them. Only thing is I know the previous previous owner did a lot of work on the bike including pretty much stripping the majority of the bike for cleaning, and rebuilt calipers all sorts (and balanced the carbs). So I have a feeling there might be a chance he may have already done the o rings. Plus the fact the guy that sold me it gave me all the stuff that the previous owner gave him and inside the plastic wallet was the print out for changing the o rings. Anyway.....

What are the symptoms that would indicate these o rings might need changing? ive only ridden the bike a few times as ive only had it a fourtnight and now the weather is entering ice age. From what ive experienced from the bike there doesnt seem to be any flat spots, accelerates like a bat out of hell and generally sounds sweet. Dont think its running rich or anything. This tells me if it aint broken dont fix it???

If it runs ok leave well alone.
Symptoms are mixtures of bad starting, hot stalling at tick over, flat spots, smoking and low temp gauge.

A lot of people strip the carbs for no reason and this causes problems that were not there before.
The main jet o'ring is damaged by simply pulling the jet and should not be touched if the bike runs well.

If you need O Rings, give me a shout. I have a couple of nitrile O Ring kits available :peace:
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

Sorry to revive, but I've only recently got my GK76A and I manged to get it all running OK for the most part, with a few teething problems but nothing major. This morning, it ran for 20 minutes then just died and has been playing up BIGTIME since, its suffering from ALL the symptoms you listed above. Do you sell the O ring kits?

Even if you don't buy one there is quite a bit of useful information there.

If I was to completely overhaul my carbs, would I get both sets?

By definition yes. It would be rather pointless to go to all the trouble to overhaul them and then do half a job. You might consider getting it done by a third party too. I deal with Matt Harper at Harper's Ultrasonic in the UK and he seems to know his business. http://www.harpers-ultrasonic.com/

I'm happy doing it myself, just wondered because people go on about the O rings going, not much about anything else going in the carbs, so if it ain't broke don't fix it, right?

I'll probably order both sets anyway seeing as its less than £50 including delivery

Considered in a very short term point of view, yes, you only need O-rings...

But if you look at it on a longer timeline of ownership don't you think you'll need the remaining items in the rebuild kit?
