Italian ZXR - Battery lowly recharge
Hello! I'm from italy, and i own one of the three zxr 400 that selled back in the 90's.
So, i have a small problem, and i thought to come on this english forum, where the small 400s are not so rare and obscure.
My battery doesent recharge propely. I've changed the old 1996 yuasa and put one new on.
At the multimeter, the three cables of the generator gave me that 2 of them put out tension, the third not.
The battery doesent have enought power to start the bike but when i pull it it start easily and the bikes do not dies also on long road trips.
Also, after some running around the battery always have somekind of charge, enought to "gneck gneck gneck gneeeeeeeck" the starter motor.
Any idea? The bike doesent have any other electrical issue: no exploding bulbs, no crazy instruments, nada.

You have already confirmed the generator is faulty;
Replace it.

Re: Italian ZXR - Battery lowly recharge
dunno, how i stated that the generator is faulty?
here in italy, spares are very difficult to found.
And, my mechanist said to me that if the generator was broken, the bike cannot run for 20 km: the ignition of cilinder would empty the battery and then the bike would turn off. But i can take long trips like 50-100 km...

"At the multimeter, the three cables of the generator gave me that 2 of them put out tension, the third not."
What is all that about then ?; all three need to give approximately the same reading.
Just because spares are not readily available it will not equate that a faulty generator will provide sufficient voltage!
Sufficient is the CRITICAL word.
If your tyre had a puncture but did not go flat instantly; does that mean it no longer has a puncture ?
Change your mechanic for a more competent unit after you replace/repair the generator.

Re: Italian ZXR - Battery lowly recharge
at the multimeter, if i put one pin to earth (i.e., on the chassis) only two of three cables give me tension. May be the third is a negative tension on ground.
Anyway, the ipothesis of my mechanist is: if the generator is broken, the flattening of your battery would be so fast that you couldnt even get home. Like 10-20 km. Not 200.
may be my english bring us to a misunderstanding.
And, the "spares are rare" means : "dont want to buy spares and then discover that they are unuseful"

Re: Italian ZXR - Battery lowly recharge
I always recommend; RTFM.
The generator requires no earth .
Read this; it briefly explains how a 3/three/III phase generator works.
The clue is THREE.

This bloke will post to Italy;

Re: Italian ZXR - Battery lowly recharge
Read The F**cking Manual.
If you set a multimeter to 20V DC and put leads; red to positive/black to earth on the battery terminals
you will see that the charging system is providing insufficient voltage to maintain the battery fully.

Re: Italian ZXR - Battery lowly recharge
Some of the chassis/running gear parts for the ZXR 400 are the same as the ZXR 750 models.
This is good as they are more readily available and cheaper.
If you struggle to get a seller to send a part to you in Italy; someone on this forum would probably act as your drop shipper.
Good luck with your new purchase.
Here is a link to online manuals;
You need to use the L model one as an extra (supplement) to the H model.

Re: Italian ZXR - Battery lowly recharge
the battery lasts for over a hundred miles, many club racers run "total-loss" so you have no generator, just a battery.
even with drain from headlights i would expect a new battery to last 50+ miles.
your generator is dead, you need a new stator - wemoto sell a H1 stator for £66 (brand new from kawasaki is £340) - http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/Kawasaki/ZX ... _Electrex/
there was no change in stator from H1 to L9.
