i just stripped my carbs on the NC30 to find a very stiff activating arm, popped if off, bit of emery cloth and lubed it up with copper grease.
in activating the chock the plungers should come out the same
it will make more sence when you take it to pieces!!

lol i was off the bike when i tried it...
last 2 starts i have pulled the choke out fully...last 2 starts have been ok.. see what happens in the next few days

it may be that you were never starting the bike with the choke fully open!!!!!

not been out today, raining all day + i didnt need to go out.. same tomorrow.. will wait n see what happens on monday morn.
i dont usually need full choke to start my bike.. to me full choke is too much.. once its going i did reduce the choke to 1/2.

its at it again this eve and took longer to get started!
"The compression test will tell you if the rings or head gasket are worn but I cant for the life of me work out how they'll tell you the clearances are out"
>spoke to shop when i got home, they asked about when the valve clearances were last done.. 5+ years. he said that a compression check should be 150-170PSI per cylender as it shows if the valvs are shutting propperly or not = shims need doing or not.
he did say that if the compresion was down the bike would have a hard time to start!!!

Yeah fair one, that all makes sense ref the valves staying open....like I said was having a thick attack and was trying to work out how it would tell if your valves weren't opening enough and couldn't work that out. But as you pointed out its just a guide isnt it, no substitute for getting in there with a set of feelers.
Good luck getting it sorted, but I'd definately get them checked next big service.....then you'll know they're done and can leave them for the next 6 years

lol.. need to save up the money for a service like that! i do oil/filter changes myself anyways.. so all id ask for is the shims.

You'll be off the road for a while unless you have a bike shop/garage nearby with a large selection of shims in stock. You cant order the new shims till you've measured the gap with the old ones....I've only ever had to order bigger shims which was what threw me....valves werent opening enough for long enough. That said, I've only ever done 2 of my bikes myself and both times had the luxury of having the engine out and on my workbench. If you think changing spark plugs is fiddly....good luck. LOL

bought a compression tester from busters, be here tomorrow...
the shims would be done by a bike shop. but instead of asking for a full service.. id only ask them to do the shims..
think i'll need a new head gasket as well?
