I know Boris; you are getting there bit by bit;which is always good.
My reply was more for others reading and adding suggestions.
Chris:
The leaking downpipe will not cause this.

If it gets worse when you put the choke on slowly, a little bit at a time, then you know they are not stuck on and making it run too rich (having too much unburnt fuel-you have this problem now)
If it stayed the same ;the chokes may be stuck on in the start position.

I have just gone back a few pages and saw the mechanic had your bike-I did not know if you had just given him the carbs and you re-fitted them until now.

About 75% of running problems on these are caused by tight valve settings; they wear down as the bike gets older.
You need an experienced motorcycle mechanic to do this ( Compression test) for you. It will cost too much to buy an accurate guage for your one time use and you would still have to learn to use it and interpret the results.
Like Boris states; they are usually hard to start though.

Why not ask the mechanic you used before if he will look at it again and how much it would cost for him to try a few things.? Tell him it is better but still not right.
You may get to fix this yourself with help on here but what usually happens is;
Sooner or later a bike running like this breaks down in the wrong place (is there a right place ?) gets abandoned for a short while and is either vandalised or stolen and you have the grief of getting both you and it home.It is still to fix.
Defeatist attitude perhaps ? ;No I see it happen every day,so will others on here.
Or you get proper sick of it and sell it !

Follow Boris's instruction for checking the exup valve and get back with the results.
Try to work on one thing at a time;if you get distracted with other ideas and symptoms write them down ;then ask.
Too much at once can make the bit you just fixed irrelevent.
Hope this is of some little help.

Your right chicken bikes are new to me. i can solve almost anything on a car and if ive got instructions and tools i can do probably anything with a bike, how ever bike exups coils and things like that im stumped.
Ive done the basic service stuff chicken

Oil
Oil filter
Air filter
Spark plugs
Fuel filter

I got a mate to clean and balance the carbs purely due to not having the time and tools hes not just some guy though hes a wizz with bikes he teaches motorbike engineering in a university he said he didn't check the valve clearances

Im basically trying to solve things my self to put it simply point me in the right direction or give me a check list and ill crack on

You lot are really helping me out so thanks alot

Plus i am determined to do this my self lol

Your local Yamaha dealer will also be able to source all the parts you need (apart from the discontinued ones) and you wont have to pay postage either. When ordering stuff from outside the EU you may also get collared for Import Duty (or VAT in other words).

Fowlers in Bristol are used by a lot of 'Independant' dealers to source Genuine parts.

As your post says - the actual headers themselves are no longer available new. that's not to say some far flung dealer has got a set sat on a shelf.....but that would mean you have the luck of the Gods!! Put a wanted ad up on the forum and form an orderly que!

There is a PDF parts book available so you can identify the individual parts you may need a see if they are available and their price.

Good luck!

Chris
