hi all, my old fzr is looking fairly ropey all round so ive decided to try and strip and restore to its former glory. just looking for ANY advice on the matter really this is the first time ive done somthing like this and i really worried about ending up with a garage full of bits and no clue what the hell to do with it all!! ! ive started stripping bits down and made sure ive taken photos as it comes off and labled all bits removed the plan was to start with the frame then slowly build the rest up but if anyone has any input/experiance in doing this sort of project i would be grateful for any pointers.

Do as you planned and take pictures as you go, video even. Gets a parts washer and find a local media blaster, zinc platter and powder coater. Gets lots of various sized containers or boxes to keep related parts together.

Cheers mate, can you recomend a decent parts washer? yeah been looking for a local powder coater but not having to much luck with stuff like that i peffer to work off recomendations so just putting the feelers out at the mo

I have a parts washer from machine mart, can't remember the size but it fits a swingarm in ok and Ive never needed a bigger one. Where are you located? Someone might be able to recommend somewhere nearby.

Start with a 4l of petrol and a small 1/4" paintbrush - that will shift quite a lot of crap from the parts.

I like to keep everything as an assembly for as long as possible. For example, remove the rear wheel wheel then put the axle and spacers etc all back together as an assembly. Same with front wheel. Then front forks, once you get them out then put the triple clamps and all fittings back on. etc etc So you end up with a collection of assemblies. One of the members who has a V4 Honda, I think it is Timon or something like that, seemed to use that technique also. He had a good thread on his rebuild. That is just my preference but it might help.

If you take a casing off put the bolts into their coresponding holes so you know where the long one goes. if you have any parts that fit under a cover you can put them into it and then use cling film around them to keep it all together, that way you don't need to find a box to put it all in.
If you do need boxes try the chinese takeaway plastic type - they're the cheapest I could find and the tops are vagely see through so you have to open loads of them to find what you need.

cheers for all the sugestions peeps, i'll start a fresh thread up when i get stuck in, got the fairings and a few other bits off the other night but ive got my bathroom to finish before i get proper stuck in! !! im in hailsham east sussex so if anyone knows a good shootblast powder coater anywhere near me that would be good to know.

good move,
it's easy to clean nut's & bolts, then chuck em in a box and forget where they came from, so draw the rough shape on a piece of cardboard, then punch em through and label (as mang suggested), then you haven't got to worry about the casings they fit in.
as for a wash i us an old washing-up bowl with some nice big coach/lorry wheel nuts in the bottom with a disposable barby grill/mesh on top of the nuts and enough kerosene to come just under the grill,
jobs a goodun the shit sinks and the parts come out nice and clean + kerosene is quite oily so as long as the parts are not stood for too long they won't corrode

edit: i use kerosene because it's cheaper than paraffin, if your not burning it, it makes no difference, it does smell alot more though and the missus will hate it
