Taking apart rvf speedo

I have some clocks to go on my project but the mileage shows way more than what the bike has done so thought about reseting them so has anyone managed to dismantle the rvf speedo? The other option is to attach a drill to the speedo cable but this may take some time.

I did try and get mine apart when one of the lamps went, however I gave up as the flaming thing felt like it was going to rip to bits. Ironically, I found while doing it that the lamps went in a different manner to that which I expected and replaced the blown one quite easily. It's since gone again... lol

Honestly.... I'd just attach the drill unless anything else needs doing in there. At least you won't break anything!

Yeah the clocks are on 53k ish so i guess it wouldn't take too long to wind em round to zero.

Would the drill method not knacker the clocks up? I have heard the numbers will never be in a perfect line when this has been done

I took mine apart to recalibrate the speedo reading after the previous owner fitted an MPH dial and got the needle in the wrong place.
The mileage wheels were clearly visible and accessible so it looked easy enough to turn the wheels, probably forward by hand to take them to zero and beyond.

The Haynes manual shows how to remove the mechanism from the instrument cluster.

I tried once also to match the mileage in a bike that I replaced the speedo on, I gave up after seeing just how difficult it was. The unit's not designed to be pulled apart - you can but they can't be put back to identical condition.

Winding forward with a drill would be easier.

Removing mechanism from housing should be easy, provided you release trip meter knob by removing the centre screw.

Agree with Cammo, speedo is not designed to be disassembled but where there's a will there's a way. The mileage wheels are "permanently" locked in place and once removed needed to be "permanently" relocked.

Winding with an electric drill sounds like a long process, by my maths a speedo running at 200kph will take 100 hours to roll 20,000km. How fast can you turn the input shaft?

Would a dremal have enough grunt to turn a speedo over? 30000rpm, wonder how fast that would be? lol

I found it easy enough to open it, but haven't attempted to reset the mileage (didn't need to,as mileage is correct) but I believe that, will be the trickiest part!

Not got any to hand but if there like the NC30 ones they come apart easy, remove all screws and bolts (not forgetting the small one in the trip reset, and remove the reset knob) and pop them apart. Theres usually a metal pin through all the wheels.

Setting the numbers is a right pain in the arse, you cant just turn them as they are all geared together and unless you reset them to the correct posision of 0 (relative to the cogs) then the numbers dont line up.

It is possible if you have time to play, but to be honest even though the drill bit method can take a long time its easier.

If you dont mind knackereing the clocks then try taking them apart.
