87 fzr 400 sp oil filter cover issue?
Hello,
Got issues with my oil filter cover on my 400 sp (87/88)
Got to the cover (removing most of the exhaust system)
But the cover bolt at the front is stuck solid (snapped two socket wrenches!!)
is there more than one bolt holding the cover on? or some sort of kung-fu way of getting the little b*%^#d
off????
bike has slowly been built/cleaned/loved back into good running order.. filter cover is nemesis on the genesis

Only the single bolt holds the cover.
It should not be overly tight/there is actually a torque figure cast into the finned cover to prevent users doing so.
It would be rare for it to be corroded to the housing, more than likely a 1/2 " breaker bar will free it>did you burst 3/8" ratchet? A stout blow to the bolt head may be required.

Try turning the bolt CLOCKWISE ever so slightly. If it's seized, that should break and rust/etc. Use a proper breaker bar, not a ratchet. It's possible that it has been cross-threaded at some point. Your other option is to heat the bolt carefully with a blow torch.
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

Are you using the bike ??? if so I'd stop now and look for a new bolt before you take that one out.

Yep I'd tap it with a hammer to try and shock it a bit, then use a 1/2" breaker bar with a 6-point socket. You will snap the bolt before you break the bar/socket if they are reasonable quality ones.
...oooor you could pop it down to a garage and ask them to use an air impact gun on it.
As said above though if its that tight have a spare one ready in case you snap it!

Might be worth getting the engine started and nice and hot as well if the exhaust can be quickly bolted back on.
Then try what they ^ said.
