Carb Cleaning

Post by scotjell »

Please could someone recommend someone for cleaning carbs. I have a bike I'm going to town on and the last thing I want is the carbs to let me down. I believe they have had some mods done to them and have definately been off in the past as someone has kindley numbered them. they have been sat around for a year or two and may just need ultra sonic cleaning. Any recommends and ££££'s please.

Can't recommend as I've never used anywhere, but from looking around the prices vary dramatically, from about £20 to £50, per carb, and often the price excludes VAT. Incidentally, I did turn up one place who were based near Bristol, so you might be able to nip over and do some wangling on the price face to face seeing as there wouldn't be any shipping involved....

http://www.v-tenmotorcycles.com/ (This link is for info only, I am not recommending that you do or don't use the place as I have had no dealings with them). However, they list ultrasonic cleaning on eBay at £40 a carb, so that's pretty hefty. You could probably get a cleaner big enough to do a single carb at a time for a bit less than that. OK, that means a DIY job and having a bit of kit that you might only use once in a blue moon, but effectively the second time you use it, the only cost is your time....

There's also http://www.harpers-ultrasonic.com/Prices.html who are a lot cheaper. However, as with the place above, it's simply somewhere I've found by searching. I cannot provide any feedback on them.

ALDI are currently selling ultrasonic cleaners for 20 quid, they are small, but the capacity can easily be increased putting a larger container on the utrasonic plate, i use a 4 pint milk bottle that i cut in half, its big enough to do a carb at a time, works a treat for me

Now, that's something I'd not considered! What a simple and perfectly logical thing to do (assuming the bottle doesn't absorb the ultrasonic waves?) If I manage to fix the thing I'm going to see how that works for me. :D
