HELP! - 1WG up to 3EN1 headlamp diameter needed!

Post by toosmooth »

Hi good people,

I'm after help with a project for which I think I'll need to lean on a set of FZR400 headlamps.

Thing is, I'm fitting them into an OW01 fairing and I need to know if they're a straight fit....

So, could anyone one here help with a stick of inches who has a set - (pre 3EN2)

Appreciated!

Oh, and if they fit, they'll be cut into 2 and the left hand one will be used to make an endurance headlamp for a Suzuka 1988 replica, this being the bike that is the direct parent of the OW01.

And fingers crossed, it'll look like this:

cheers!

First of all, you don't want any FZR400 headlight, they run a Yamaha bulb that's expensive and don't give out much light. Your picture's a model kit

My Bimota SB6 runs crap lights, so I had a back plate made and mounted 2 GSXR1100 lamps.

After - not the best shot

You need the light to have 3 mount points (to allow right left and up adjustment) then put a spring between the plate and the subframe mount. once it's been adjusted you can use some tube cut to length and do away with the springs.

Thanks for the reply Boris!

Yes, it's a model - sadly for such a good looking bike (and one that was ridden by Mick Doohan) there are just so few pics of it on the www.

As for using a GSXR part, I'm being a little bit puristic (not a word, made it up!) So I want to use a Yamaha part, you can see why I'd do that though right?! My guess is also that the little FZR part might go straight in.

As for expense of bulbs and light emitted? Well, not so important for this build. If it ever sees night time, I'd be surprised.

You don't have the 1WG headlamp dimension do you?

Headlights
1wg flat plastic lens type; actually domed by 5mm.
Lens dia.=130mm at face. 136mm where lens abutts reflector 10mm back from rim.
Depth=100mm from rim to end of bulb pins.

headlights in housing=
115mm from rim to plastic back cap.
302mm top mount holes center to center.
252mm bottom ...................................
Holes 10 mm
Top axis holes to bottom axis holes=138 centers.

3HE 600 are identical/more readily available/cheaper but more to the point;glass lensed and utilise H4 bulbs not the hard to source 400 type units (H3 ????)

Owt else???

I am so thankful for that post - it's perfect! and pointed me in a direction I hadn't considered (I thought the 400 and 600 lenses, bulbs etc would be the same)

Following your line of suggestion I have measured the OW lens and it is indeed Glass, it is 130mm and it seems to be the same headlight unit (in terms of the actual lens/reflector part) as the FZR600/750/1000 of the time.

If it happens to be in the same mounting shell as well (it's still fitted to the bike, so can't measure that yet) that'd be even better.

I'm hoping that it'll be a stock Yamaha part from another model - they only made 500, you wouldn't commission a bespoke headlamp shell for that - would you?

FZR600 lights are 2 a penny, so I'm happy to butcher - it seemed a bit sad to start hacking away at an OW light unit for no good reason with other identical parts (hopefully) so readily available.

Really appreciated - thanks!

Paul.

Well If you had said you already had a 0w01 unit I could have said that they were the same.
I have a 0w01 race fairing on the 1000r clubmans and it came with original headlamps and mounts from the donor. They are all the same fitting but some have rubber back caps rather than plastic..

Perfect! Love it! - thanks again.

I can stick the OW unit on the shelf and be precious about it's heritage, although slightly less carefully now I know it's a stock Yamaha unit from 275,000,000 other 90's Yamahas!

Right, eBay, here we come....

All the 400 / 600 / 750 / 1000 lamps are pretty much interchangable, they use the 4 front fairing mounts. As you say you'll probably just cut out a lamp from a UK unit and mount it up.
