Single front disk

O.k guys i was in a accident a few weeks ago and in the process of fixing the nc30, today i was doing more work on the bike & cleaning the calipers (thought they were sticking) and noticed my front brake disk is really warped (wasnt like that before the crash, nearly touches the fork leg).

So i have removed the caliper and cable tied it out of the way, it has a lump of alloy between the pads and i pumped the lever so it bites down on it. so effectly i,m working on only one front disk untill i get my smaller banjo bolt.

I plan to run only one front disk and caliper and remove the warped front disk and the unused caliper.

Just wondered if anyone else has tryed this ???

P.s my reason for doing this is i,m bloody skint and cannot afford to get new disks atm and would rather get new ones that risk getting warped second hand ones.

Due to winter i dont plan to go go on any fast runs so a single brake should be enough short term till funds improve

I've seen the 'Yanks' do this with their bikes in some of the magazines from over there.

They just have single discs on Hayabusas, GSXR1000s - all the big bikes.

Personally I think its a bit mad!! And not sure how an insurance company would see it either - but its up to you!!!

arnt you going to have to remove one of the brake lines too and in removing the brake line wont you need a smaller banjo bolt off the master cylinder, to be honest id rather not ride than ride with one disc and a bodged brake system, or you could try to bend the warped disc back, thats what we do with warped/bent disc's at work on mountain bikes, worth a shot

or you could just look on ebay, if you get a disc and it comes warped you should be able to get your money back

my first post says i,m removing the caliper and disk and awaitng on a smaller banjo bolt so the hose will be gone too

loads of bike run a single front disk and its only a short term fix

i'd hunt for a cheap disc, better than removing it all together, honda wouldn't have put it there if it wasn't necessary.

it'll be perfectly safe.. but, you run an increased risk of overheating and warping the remaining disk.. then you'll need to buy a new pair instead of just one.

discs on "single disc" bikes are generally thicker material to cope with the extra energy they are required to dissipate.

and the lever may feel a bit wooden as 1 caliper will require half the fluid movement to lock onto the disc that 2 would.

Not sure if it'll affect anything but won't the gyroscopic effect of the brakediscs be different with one missing, therefore affect how heavy, or light in this case the steering? I've seen brake discs for £15 on ebay, thats cheap enough?

I can see a big problem with it!

Get stopped by the police you have a defective braking system, it's 3 points minimum and a fine.
