weird charging problem ,found.....

hey guys , Well the day started out great sunny weather and such so i got on my nc30 and started her up then pulled away from the house like a bat out of hell ,all was well until she started to lose power and eventually stalled . I then proceeded to try and start her up again and heard the solenoid saying "NO-CHANCE", So i called a friend to jump her with a spare battery and she fired up . but when i arrived home and shut her off i decided to try and start her again to check if my battery charged and yet again the solenoid was complaining . after a drink or three i took a tester and jumped her then saw that the reading was at 8,5 volts . I then removed the left hand plastics and stuff , but when i opened the cover on the engine OIL came rushing out?
So my Question is if that`s normal? (because it doesn`t make sense to me to have oil inside that part of the engine) anyone have any idea why there is oil in there?

I take it you removed the generator cover and oil came out?

From my limited knowledge I really don't think that should be happening. Most likely a blown seal somewhere.

That`s what i figured and, i almost forgot how the hell do i get the flywheel loose to reach the alternator coils? I`ve been trying but it just turns around even in gear .

Alternator coils are attached to the back of the generator cover aren't they?

Plus you need a flywheel puller I think.

Oil under the alternator cover is not an issue, oil from the crankshaft bearing, there is no need for a seal, will drain back into the sump.

A battery with only 8.5 volts is likely to be stuffed. Get the bike started and measure the battery voltage. Should be >13.5 at idle and approx 14.5 at 5000 rpm. if not then start by checking the stator (alternator).

To check the alternator before dis-assembly, unplug the rect/reg and measure the resistance between the three yellow wires, should be <1.0 ohm. If not check the connector located in the V between the cylinders, it may be faulty. Only then would I suspect the stator.

If the stator resistance is ok then measure the voltage between the three yellow wires with the engine running at 5000 rpm, should be approx 50V AC. Do not connect the rect/reg.

ok thanx alot Magg , i will try that once i get to see what the stater looks like,anyway the 8,5 volts was when i disconected the r/r from the battery and measured it from the r/r output(engine was running on only the battery)

Magg is spot on.

The oil is fine.

Most importantly, you need to test the electrics properly and find your faulty item before replacing parts at random.

After you remove the 14mm bolt you need to screw in an M20 x 1.5 bolt to pop the flywheel off.

Before you get carried away test the electics fully.

Start with the genny.

Fully charge the battery and disconnect the reg/rec plug.

Start the bike and measure the 3 wires with the voltage set to AC on the tester and the engine at 5000rpm.

If you call the 3 wires A B and C

Measure

AB
BC
AC

You should have around 50v AC on all 3 pairs at 5000rpm.

Do this before doing anything and report back.

OK ,i did as u said and there is no reading even at higher rpm, what now? but funny enough when i plug in the R/R the output from it is around 8 to 9 volts.

What resistance reading do you get between the three yellow wires with the rect/reg disconnected?
