Sprocket and chain sizes

Post by iArGod »

Hi guys

I wanted to up the teeth on my rear sprocket for my nc30 to 43/44; i dont know much about the subject but understand ill need a new chain to accommodate the new sprocket.

How do i know what chain i need for a different sized sprocket?
Anything else i should know on the matter?

Thanks

What sized sprockets (front and rear) do you have on it now? The number of teeth is usually stamped on them.

If you have standard sizes fitted (15t front, 40t rear) it would be easier to go to a 14t front because you won't need a new chain then and it gives a similar gear ratio to upping the rear to 43/44.

Just make sure that whatever new sprocket you buy is the same pitch as what's already on there. 525 is standard, but many will have been fitted with 520, again it's usually stamped on the sprockets.

Also - 43 is fine, 44 is bloody tight and you get a lot less adjustment for a slack chain as the sprocket will hit the swinger.

If you are on std 15t front then get a 14t...easier and cheaper!

Saying that, you should really be getting the chain and sprox in a set..

It depends a bit on the track, I used to like 14 front and 40 rear on my track bike with rvf gearbox.

Try 14/38 or 15/40, of 520 pitch.

A 14T front sprocket is the equivalent to 3 more teeth at the rear.
Less teeth = less weight, it may be by a small amount but it'll help the engine to 'pick up' faster; the 520 pitch is also lighter than the standard 525.
When the mind is relaxed, the body will go faster! 8-)
