3TJ Air Filter Adapter

Post by Maelstrom »

An update on the air cleaner issue.
In another thread I mentioned that I had written to HiFlo UK to see if they would produce an air filter element for the 3TJ series. They responded to my question with a negative. The other alternative as EC said is to squash down a K&N from the 1WG model, which is about 10mm longer . That has the drawback that it must reduce flow to some extent.
So we are going to make 10 adapters which will the fitment of a 1WG air filter element to the 3TJ box. Basically a plastic ring with an O-ring recess at one end. It will just extend the existing lid higher and be sealed with two O-Rings instead of one. Unfortunately the easiest material that we could lay our hands on is POM, the sort of thing you would use to make a rubbing block for your chain. This is overkill but so be it. They will cost 500 Thai baht, (about 10 GBP) for the assembly, including the O-Ring. You will need to use 4 longer screws to hold the lid down. If anyone is interested let me know and I can adjust the quantity to suit. As soon as we have them finished I will post pics on this thread and in the for sale section.
Cheers All

Why not just cut the top off the 1WG shorten the filter and reglue it with silicon seal ??? You can do it with pillar / band saw.

The 1WG and 3TJ airboxes are restrictive so fitting a K+N give you a cleanable element rather than any gain to airflow.

Wasn't trying to increase the airflow EC. Your idea might fly but K&N filters are expensive. I can buy a HiFlo for $9 US but a K&N costs $38 and then I would have to have to cut it up. This way replacement filters are easy. On the flow front, I guess an entire new lid would be the perfect answer, but it is not worth making the mould because I do not think you could ever sell enough to get your investment back. Or my investment back as the case may be

i wouldn't have thought squashing down the mesh filter would decrease airflow any more than a taller airbox and filter would increase it,
but could be your onto something with the lid adoption, as it make filter changes easier

on another note, what is POM ? where do you get it, and in what sizes ?

iv'e been knocking up plastic seal guards (swinger protectors) but they only last about 4/5 K miles see below

HD,
POM is Polyoxymethylene a common trade name is Delrin. Just the thing you are looking for. Abrasion resistant and very tough. I am in Thailand so you will have to hunt it down in your area.
With regard to the air filter I was assuming that to compress it down 10mm one would have to twist at the same time. This would create some closure of the filters surface. Whether or not that is significant is anyone's guess given that, as EC has already pointed out, the air box (most likely the intake hole in the lid) is restrictive. This approach is just my way of doing things. It bugs me if I have to compromise anything. Also I will have to sell this bike soon and I would like the new owner to have an easy option when it comes time to replace the air filter.
cheers

The easy option is to buy the standard 3TJ filter
