Anyone have any tips on repairing plastics

Post by Capey »

Hi all just wondering if anyone has had any good results with DIY plastic repairs. I need to fill some deep scratches and have tried steel epoxy (the two tubes you mix) after 24hrs tried sanding it down. It didn't work and pulls off the thinner it becomes when sanding it down.

Appreciate your ideas

Depending on how deep it is, depends on what you need to use.

I filled a dent in my tank on my bandit using both Isopon p38 + p40. One is a fibreglass mix and one is a filler, think p38 is the filler.

Basically you mix some of the fibreglass with a blob of hardener, paste it on so it sits just below the surface, allow to dry and cure until rock hard. Then mix the filler with a blob of hardener then paste it so it sits just above. Leave to cure then sand until smooth and the contours are right.

The mix of hardener is key though, too much and it will crack, too little and it will be too soft.

Some pics of the dent repair, don't have a before but is about an inch deep and then you can see the width.

and never really took an after but you can see the tank from the right angle here and it isn't noticable:

Just a note though, be really leanient with the p40, you need like hardly any. I put it over the top thinking I would sand it down and had to end up chisseling it out

And give it like 5+ times with the p38, you really have to make sure it is perfect. Pots are like £5+ each though!

Are you on about repairing plastic? Your tank is metal isn't it or does your method work on plastic too?

Sorry yeah, it is metal.

The stuff is meant for plastic as well though so would work the same. I have used p40 to re attach one of the lugs for the air filter covers.
