Advice on painting clock housing

Hi there, the back of my chrome clocks is starting to peel. I've taken them off to paint them black.

Can anyone advise me on what I should do about the peeling part? Should I sand it down before painting it?

It looks to be made of plastic, but do I need to prep the chrome before painting to make sure it sticks?

Sorry to ask such a basic question.

I had this exact thing myself. You SHOULD use etch primer for chrome coated bits, but its so thin on the plastic i just rubbed it back like a mofo and put about 5 coats of plastic primer on top lol. Mind you i had 1 reaction on the first coat i i didnt really clean it properly either, but once rubed back and continued i was grand :)

Anyway, i then gave the covers a couple of coats of satin black, let them dry and then dust, literally dust some lacquer from about 50cm's at least just so it falls onto the paint to give it some protection seeing as its on the front of the bike and getting battered by the elements. I'll get a couple of photos of how mine turned out later, but just giving that wee dust of laquer made it look like a light OEM wrinkle effect without being too shiny, was rather chuffed at it and it hasnt reacted or weather, YET lol :D

Brilliant advice DaddyC. I saw the thread by 176OES and he sent me a helpful message.

I did it last night. Quick rub with scotchbrite, 3 coats of grey primer and then 2 coats of satin black and seems ok.

Will be checking tonight if it needs another coat and then, thanks to your advice, I'll zap it with some clear laquer.

Well painting went well, but my attempts to fill the area where the chrome plating had come away failed. I used epoxy resin as I had no filler

It's left a slight mark which hopefully won't be obvious once the new darker screen is fitted in place of the givi.

I'll get some proper filler and have another go another time. Once I can piccies will be on :)

What you can do, but it's a PITA and takes fricking ages, is peel the chrome off. But it's not worth it just for a quick tidy-up. I've done the same on a CB-1's right-hand plastic crankcase cap, but almost all the chrome had come off that so I kinda had to.

Do you feel the screen has helped you much in any way? Is yours a type S?
