Another "Timing" thread again, Searched but still confused.

Post by Marsbar »

Ok, my bike isnt running after I installed a BBK. I beleave I have my timing wrong as the air box is blowing rather then sucking. I set the T mark arrow on teh right side on crank shaft facing towards the wheel were there is a little mark on the crankcase. I am just guessing this is the mark as i see no other, but it does just look like a casting mark

I set the cams up to what it says in the GK73A manaul, i know the engines are different but its the only thing i could come up with. with 19 pins between the 2 markers

I have searched this site and read through 9 search pages, and most of them was beacause of engine swaps and messing the CDI up with there restricted/unrestricted ones. but mine is still the same engine and i have the (i do beleave) the SP cdi with the single plug.

I am only getting a spark of 1 & 4 from coil one but no spark from 2 & 3, so i think this is dud but could timing correctly rectify this?

:rocks:

I cannot remember how many links to count for the 76a as i lost the manual when my computer crashed BUT im sure it was slightly different to the 73a.
I would say you need to get a dial gauge and get some cam timings, its not too hard if you read up.
Firstly swop the coils over and see if the other is sparking, if not check you have 12v at the coil and get back to me. Do you have a ohm meter? as i have an sp cdi and i can test what readings you should have on yours.

i counted 20 pins when it looked timed "correctly", Ive timed to engines up before. It seems right in my eyes but why is the air box blowing instead of sucking in? :S

Yh I have an ohm meter, I didn't swap the coils over I label'd them up and put back in correct place, Have I mentioned I hate electrics? :P lol.

But testing the coils wouldnt be a solution would it? as the air box is blowing it means engine wont get any fuel at all it just blows it away.

Its hard to say, does the airbox proper blow as you get pulsing that could feel like its blowing.
The reason i say swop the coils is that if it is the actual coil thats bad the spark will stay with the good coil when you change them over. If the spark stays on 1/4 then you will know the problem is further up the electrical system, either the 12v supply, the pulse wire from the cdi or the actual cdi.

Hmm ok ill try that tomorrow after college with the coils. Yh its a pulsating blow out the air box i put paper over the hole to make it clearer.

I swaped the wires fir the coils and it sparked on 2 & 3 and not 1 & 2 so its not the coils. its something else argh. Was hoping it was the coils as I can get a spare set for free.

I wouldnt think its the pick up sensor because it does actually spark? or am i wrong in thinking that?

Got the rocker cover off again and side casing, been looking at manuals and the bandit 400 cams looks the same so going to time it from that. But that wont solve my electrical problem. Hope its not the CDI :S

So it's not the coil and it will not be the pickup as this feeds both coils from the cdi.
Next thing to check is if you have 12v at the coil.
The wire feeding 12v is one wire split to feed each coil so if one is 12v and the other 0v the wire is broken at the coil end. If you get 12v then you are looking at the feed wire from the cdi. This is a direct wire straight from the cdi, check the connection at the 12 pin block as they can push in at the green rubber seal.
Regards the cams you may find a difference in the cam pin count (carnt remember) BUT so long as you line up the 'E' mark, '2' mark and '3' marks you will be ok. The two slots in the end of the cam should face each other.

Cheers for that, Unfortunately i didnt have time today as was at college rebuilding a NC23 bottom end.

Them checks are alot clearer then what others have said. The cams look the same on bandit 400 with markings ect, i think i have enough info to do it correctly this time :P (20 pins im guessing)

Been told my Engine is a GSX-R400RFNM(SPII) from the engine number. Is that good? i know theres different engines ect. As the bike has had an engine swap, The frame number is GK73A ****** witch i find odd.

Checked the lines and they all had continuity. Timing seems right :S. im just boggled, Feel like my mind has hit a mental block.
