Did the FZR 400 ever come in 5 speed??
Hi all, finally been out on the bike today at Darley Moor, first time ever out on a bike and wow it was amazing, never had so much fun in my life!!! Had a few problems with the bike to start with as the carbs where pouring everywhere with fuel and bike was not running right but after we fixed the problem the bike run like a watch and performed great was really impressed.. Only problem i had was that the bike felt like it needed a extra gear along the straights i kept trying to find 6th at around 13.5k rpm but there was nothing? Bearing in mine my bike is a SP but i found out the other day that the complete bottom end is 3EN, because the engine is a slight miss match i am wondering if the 3EN ever came in 5 speed? I have searched the net and have nothing of a 5 speed..
One other thing, the bike was running at a temp of 60 degrees round the circuit which seems to be a bit low although it has upgraded larger rad, could this be something to do with the thermostat or is this perfectly ok?
Apart from that the bike is superb, i am itching to go out on it again, i absolutely love it
!!!!!
Cheers guys

The gearbox is odd all FZR400's have 6 gears.
Were you told it was a 3en box ???
Maybe drop the engine out, drain the oil and take the sump off then go through the gears and see if they're selecting properly.

It might be a Thunderace gearbox but it definitely ain't an FZR one.

Cheers for replys guys!!
Well i was told by the guy who rebuilt it that it had a 3EN bottom end, and when i was having a check round the bike i noticed the bottom end shell was stamped 3EN so i'm guessing they used the whole lot and used the barrel, head and pistons from the SP!! So the gearbox, clutch etc im guessing is 3EN..
I will take the sump off and see whats going on, oil has to be changed anyway as it seemed to be over full while checking this morning, it took alot of banking the bike on it's side for the oil to clear the site glass, i think it could be full with fuel as the float bowl was nackerd, fuel was even coming out from where the exhaust manifold and silencer meet!!!!! The floatbowl is finaly fixed though now after alot of head scratching..
Thanks

Ok thanks Taggy, so the bike should still receive a good peak power at this lower temp?Taggy wrote:the bdk thermostats are set to run at 60degrees so i guess that should be ok!

Another thing that's just come to me. I've known people remove the sixth gear from race bikes before now to save on weight...

There's 1 gearchange into first
Then 5 more to get into 6th, maybe you forgot the change from neutral > 1st.
Although somebikes can have a gear removed you wouldn't do that to a 400 unless you were on a very short twisty circuit especially if it's going to to go on more than one track in a season.

Re: Did the FZR 400 ever come in 5 speed??
Maybe your right guys, i was counting from one down and was pretty sure i was only getting 5th, I was probably expecting to much from the bike trying to catch some of newer R6's
!! I have drained the oil and there was 3.5litres that came out
could smell the fuel that must of seeped into the sump to make it up to that amount!!! Hopefully after this oil change with the right amount we should be good to go...
