An S comes with Brembo brakes on the front as standard as well as adjustable dampening front shocks. Few other dopey bits n bobs too with the tail and speedo cluster area, but thats the main obvious bits.
Infact looking at the tail again, it looks a bit more straight compared to a slightly more upswept rear of an S too.

Re: ID this super four
Yep, I would agree it's a 96 Version S but it should have VERSION S written on each side panel just under the CB400 badge, if it hasn't then I reckon the side panels have been changed at some point in it's life.

By the way, the Brembo brakes only came on the 98 NC31's and then standard on the later NC39 HYPER V-TEC models.

Re: ID this super four
I must hoke out the actual Honda japan link at home if i cant find it here, with the whole specs of the Version S. But it mentioned how the Brembo's are standard from factory for them (as well as the adjustable shocks i mentioned and the more flicked tail and speedo cluster being different) and there was a post on here when i was enquiring if mine was an actual S and someone else said the same thing.
Will have a nosey in a moment.

Ok there's a couple of things to go on, but no mention of what i had said lol. This is melting my head as i know ive looked up the specs somewhere and seen what i mentioned (near enough sure its another Honda japan page), not that there's much info out there tho. Have to check when home. Could swear the Brembos was one thing lol, apologies in advance if not

Same here mate, always learning
Looks like the Brembo's came on the late 96 ( November looking at the Honda press release in your link) Version S models, possible the 97 model by time it was release. I have some Japanese brochures some where on Super Fours, I'll dig them out and scan them to put on here
