Is the Haynes wrong?

Post by royster81 »

Chatting to a mate today he told me he balanced the carbs, put 118/120 jets in for his system/can and set A/F screws to 2 turns as the Haynes says .

Am I wrong or are they meant to be 2.5 turns?

Don't know the right setting but You will soon know if they're wrong. A quarter turn either way is enough to stop it pulling cleanly off the stop, never mind a half turn.

Dunno if this helps, but the section 1-6 of the NC30 service manual tells:
Pilot screw initial opening: 2 turns out

lol, rhory thats what i did, haa haa. its jetting the bugger now. a combination of 118s and 120s of OE and aftermarket aint good. gotta be fixing that. general consensus seems to be going back to standard 115/118 with my 2.25 A/F? i think new plugs as the at least 5 year old dead ones cant be good for the dumpy idle, lol

dumpy idle is probably down to carb balance, float height and mixture screws.

2 turns is a good base setting.. open them all by 1/4 turn and see if it smoothes out or drops.. if you have a good feel for the engine youll notice the slight, 50rpm drop or gain.

my final setting is very close to 2.5 turns out.. basically keep opening them until the idle drops and then back them all back in 1/4 turn to get the smoothest idle.

before working on carbs make sure your valve clearances are all good and in spec and then jet / check and balance
