Reluctant Start After Stripdown....

Hi Guys and Gals,

Sorry to not have search around as im sure there are plenty of people who have written this kind thing up. But im at work and naturally wont have the chance to search.

Have put the Nc30 back together after measuring the clearances and it doesnt want to start and I flattened the battery in the process of trying so it was train into work.

What techniques should I try? She is getting fuel and at least some form of spark after the backfire she did while I was trying to turn her over.

So what are your tips for starting a NC after a total stripdown?

I know it sounds obvious. Make sure you haven't pressed the kill switch.

Then try methodically eradicate each possibilities.

Like you have started..

All 4 plugs sparking?

Fuel getting through? Enough fuel... tap set to on, silly things like this.

Charged battery?

All wires and cables connected properly after your assembly?

I was unable to check the plugs (too little time when I was trying to leave for work)
Fuel Tap was on (tried in both positions)
Fuel seemed to be getting through as I had a sizable backfire out the exhaust (which hinted at their being a spark at least somewhere)
Checked the Kill Switch
Battery was charged and it turned over strongly in the first instance but I flattened it trying (its on charge for when I get home)
Gonna double check the wiring. Im pretty sure its all back on.

After the backfire she did seem to be trying to start (coughing a little). Could smell fuel in the exhaust too.

How should I go about starting her? Choke Position? Prime the carbs? (If so how)

mine took ages to start the first time after striping it,

did you remove the 'idle' cable for the carbs? that was my problem, hadnt wound it in enough when i put it back on

and also it will take a little while for the fuel to get through.

i flattened about 4/5 batterys, lol but it got there in the end.

My guess would be that it's been flooded, this is how my bike behaves when flooded.

Use full choke, don't touch the throttle and see how you go.

It can take a while to start when the carbs have been dry, use jumper leads and hook it up to a running car, the battery won't run flat when trying to start (let the starter motor cool down between attempts though).

Can be a bitch to get them going!

If it hasn't started after about 10 seconds of button, leave it for at least 5 mins before trying again.

As said above, full choke no throttle till it fires then gas it a bit.
