Bad Running - 3TJ Answer and now I'm buggered!

Post by MarkT »

Hi, Well I think I have found the answers but I just don't know if it can ever be fixed! Had a look at it today had a job starting it and when I did (using carb cleaner) the revs went all over the place as usual, settled it down a touch and put my hand over the air intake and revs Rose, I thought good! Warmed it up and let it run about 2k. Sprayed carb cleaner around the carb inlets and the revs went mad! Straight up to 5k so it tells me the bloody obvious that the intake rubbers are leaking!! I must say that the carb clamps were not done up and a good forum member told me just pushed in should seal enough anyway as that's how they race, biiy even so you can only tighten the clips a bit anyway due to a collar on the clip. I am getting some carbs later in the week but I really can't find any intake rubbers ANYWHERE!

I am going to take the rubbers off tomorrow and visually inspect them as with the engine running I can rock the carbs and airbox and there is no change in revs so I am thinking it may just be leaky joints where the clip is, if so take the spacers out and make them half the size so the clips do up tighter.

If anyone has any ideas about what I can do please put tthem forward as I have not ever spent so much money or time on a bike as I really want to ride this but how on earth do I get the inlet rubbers that have not been available for years!

Thanks
Mark

Can anyone suggest somewhere where I could get some flatslidis for my 3TJ so I can price up what I need to start saving?
Thanks

as a quick fix you could coat the rubber in the glue stuff you get in puncture repair kits, it might just give you a def. answer as to if it is the rubber not sealing around the clamp or leaking due to being perished.

what do you mean by intake rubbers,

the one's from the airbox to carbs should be easy enough to find, or just get an airbox off the bay £20 ish and make sure it has the rubbers ;)

if you mean the carb manifold boots (between the engine and carbs) then that's a bit more of a challenge,
fowllers can get em,(jap import, so it'll take a while) and when i asked last summer were just under £40 each with VAT and delivery (just short of £160 for all 4 and obviously gold plated)

so try the taggy method and if this sorts it out then put a post in the "for sale/wanted section" for a set of carb manifold boots

Yes it's them manifold rubbers and yamaha japan do not make them anymore they have been deleted. Fowlers confirmed this and I have spent all day on the phone to dealers etc with no luck. I managed to get some old ones but there was no guarartie with them and that cost a fortune! Have advertised in wanted section for about a week now!

Mark if you can "rock the carbs & airbox" then they are not fixed on at all!
Get the carbs pushed right down it can be quite hard, undo the clamps fully first. I think you can see through two small holes in the frame rails when they are right in the rubbers (use a torch) then tighten them up.
Try this first before adjusting anything away from standard settings.

yeah they are a bit of a bugger to get on,
try a small smear of grease around the carb where it pushes into the rubber, slips in nice and easy ;) and will also help seal it
