FZR400 3EN2 Tail-piece ?

Post by sevenfourate »

My recently bought 1989 3EN2 has one of the 'lugs' that come down the sides of the rear-light cluster on the tail piece missing, and id like to pick up another unit.

Will any other years / model tail-pieces fit or do i need that specific year and bike ?

I think it's unique but why not just make another lug with a Plastex kit http://www.repairproducts.co.uk/page20.htm a £10 kit is fine for this

Which part of the tail unit is it? I'm having trouble picturing. I have a complete left hand tail panel in red/white/blue in the loft on the garage I think.....

Boris is right about Plastex / Plastech. Either are very good products and you can easily make another lug. I've managed to make a full set of front fairings from two smashed up sets in the past. It stuck parts together, made lugs, missing parts etc. Did take me about 20 or so hours, but it's good stuff and fairly easy to use.

Boris - see you are back from France. You stopped grinning yet? Good job I didn't come, as my bike has just blown a fork seal this weekend, while out for a bit of a brisk ride.

Thanks for the suggestion Boris - see if i can locate a 'tail-piece' first. If not i now have a back-up plan !!!

Phil - Im pretty sure a few people are getting confused over the part im looking for ! On mine there appears to be a seperate plastic part that forms the rear end, combined with a 'cover' around the rear light lense. Not sure other years are the same from what i can make out from various photos online ive found.

Anyway,i have some pictures for your viewing pleasure:

Those bits are hard to find and I think it's a 3en2 only piece ... you might try Fowlers for a quote on a new one, you never know it might not be to expensive.

Yes Phil did a great job on those fairings the pic is of them sanded down and the patches are a bit difficult to see but the top lugs were broken and the nearer panel had a crack through the bottom in the middle ... then there were other bits too.

Nice job, can I ask if the colour is a pearl white and which paint was used? From the pic it looks a nice job.

I have fairings which sound in a similair state of disrepair, very brittle, cracked and the crack turned into a split and got five times longer while being stored somehow??

Also trying to remove stickers after 22 years to prep is proving time consuming and a bit of a bugger.

The set i purchased from the bay have a piece missing on the bottom but after reading this post Ill be purchasing a kit as mentioned here, thanks for that advice.

I got the paint from RS Racepaint in aeresol cans - expensive mind. if it's just one piece it shouldn't be to much, but I did a whole bike
Stickers were removed with a sander and course paper .... then medium then fine
after that use a "mouse" or palm sander and finally hand finish.
You don't need to go any finer than 800 grade.
