GK73A timing help please!!

Post by griff488 »

Hi folks

In another thread i had a problem with my gixxer chucking out smoke! In a bid to sort this out i bought another engine that wasn't as good as it shouldve been and needs the cams refitting and timing marks lining up before i can see if its any good!

This is how i had it but i wanted to check this was right. The pic shows the right hand side of the engine with the exhaust cam on the right.

This pic shows the crank timing marks. I assume these just line up (or should anyway)

Are the cams the correct way around?
Once cams are fitted and theres 20 pins between the marks on the sprockets should all the timing marks line up? ie the cams and crank to their respective marks?

Cheers Griff

Hi Griff,
looks correct, with the 't' at the mark you have 'E' arrow facing the front cam gasket face then 20 pins between '2' on the exhaust cam and '3' inlet cam, only thing i'd say is the chain looks a little sloppy and makesure you turn the motor the way it runs.

Thanks for that Chris
Is it the T i line up with the crankcase or the arrow on the tab??
The cam chain tensioner wasn't fitted when i took the pics so thats why the chains a bit slack.

fingers crossed theres nothing wrong with it!!

hi just want to throw a spanner in the works look at the casting photo there is two marks on the casting one level with casting split and another a lil lower (below the first bolt under the top marking) with the differant trigger wheels some use the top others the lower so pull a plug and check in cyl 1&4 is tdc and rotor arrow (by the "T") is alined second earler motors use 219FTH cam chain later uses 215FTH chain (number stamped in the side) some some motors use 19 pins once tensioner is fitted the cam shaft ends must aline with the head as it sits in the photo

good luck mate
