possible new owner
hi. i'm returning to this site after many years (used to have an NC29)
now thinking of getting an FZR400RR as i found a great one near to me. was wondering of anyones opinions. (obviously going to be a little biased)
are there any major things i should look for? any noted problems? as much info as possible would be good.
i will be hopefully exchanging my BMW G650Xmoto for one very soon if they will do a deal (tried the supermoto deal and now want a sports bike again)
cheers

Turn on the ignition and you should hear a "weep, weep" noise of the exup being opened and closed. try to have a good look at the downpipes if they're badly rusted then it could be a problem - they're not expensive sechond hand just hard to find.
Suspension can be sorted out
Top fairings and fuel tanks are rare because racers crash them.
Apart from this they're quite robust. The usual things apply after that so check the bearings, chain, tyre wear and any odd noises.
Ask when the valve clearances were last done - if they have a reciept that's a plus as a garage can charge around £300 for this

Re: possible new owner
as evil said
but when the exup zeros itself, you should also hear the fuel pump working to pressurize the carbs and depending on where it's at you should also see the fuel filter fill/bubble up you can see it through the gap between the tank and frame on the right hand side which is an easy indicator it's working ok
wish i new this when i got mine as it never had a fuel pump on it at all

HOW MUCH
sorry didn't mean to shout
but it has to be original, and in mint condition for that price and then some
best part of 22 hundred, does seem like a shed load of money
post the pics

From your base 3TJ you add about £100 for a 4DX, the UK model. It has no speed restriction an MPH speedo and an oil cooler. The bad point is the rear light isn't as pretty and you can add a kmh to mph coverter to the 3TJ to get round it.
The 3TJ 02 is the most common SP and add about £200 for it, I think the red / white colour scheme is just about the best on the FZR's (just shading the black 3TJ) and of course the suspension is better than the 3TJ. The gearbox is a close ratio witch is a mixed blessing in terms of town riding versus open road.
The 3TJ 04 to 07 are rare they can command their own money but equally you wouldn't want to change them from stock, which almost goes against their potential.
Best bike, 600 conversions apart I reckon the 3TJ with better suspension and MPH converter.

Cheers. I remember seeing a 3tj2 SP for the first time in the bike park at the 1990 Donington GP and falling in love with it. Am I correct in remembering that Yamaha UK brought a number of imports in and a lot of them ended up on the track?
