NC30 Forks

Post by chrisK »

Im wanting to turn my bike (NC30) into a race bike, but want to know what the general concensus is wrt forks...

Are the standard forks good enough (maybe on full-ish preload settings)? Or is it more advisable to get them revalved?

Another option is to go for a whole new set of forks. I've seen that you can use a whole load of different forks from different bikes, but which works best? I like this option mainly for cosmetic reasons, but does it make a massive difference to handling?
My biggest concern with this is how do you know if everything is all peachy before buying? Or even after, before putting it on the bike, is there a way of testing them? Or am I being overly paranoid?

Also, I've managed to get a warped disc, so if I could get a complete front end that could kill two birds with one stone?

If not, has anyone tried the disc's that you see advertised on Ebay from Hong Kong? The wavy ones are what Im looking at. Can they be trusted for the track?

Obviously I want to do all of this as cheaply as possible  within reason.

Thanks for any help! :P

if the shoe was on the other foot ,i'd contact rick oliver (member off this forum) and i'd get a few parts from him

for starters, keep the forks standard,i mean,nc30 forks with different internals, yes 996 forks,R1 forks, gsxwhatever are probably better but they are more expensive to buy and what happens when you go arse over tit (be realistic,it's going to happen if your trying out there and even if your not someone may take you out) yes they are more expensive to replace, rick does a fork kit for just heavier springs or you can get the revalve kit from him also.

discs,i too asked this question months ago about the HK discs and never got a straight answer,i think no one has tried them so no one can comment but i wasn't going to be the first and to me brakes are the most important thing on the bike, there is no point going fast if you can't stop, but be my guest, try the HK ones as i think we'd all like to hear how they are doing.

brakes, yes there are different brackets for big NISSINs or brembos but i think it's been proven that a set of standard calipers rebuilt with good pads and braided lines are enough to stop one of these wee bikes so you might just be spending money to have flashy kit rather than what you need to get out and race

i don't race but i know people who do and this is the general feeling

Thanks for the reply.

Everything that you have said has been along the same lines as I was thinking.
I would love to go for the USD forks from another bike, but I guess it may just be a head over heart kind of thing
And you're right about them getting damaged. Luckily I have not gone over at the track yet, but its bound to happen... I think Id cry if I damaged a set of nice forks

I have braided hoses on my bike already, and even with a slightly wobbly disc there is more than enough power to lift the back under hard braking.
But are'nt the wavey discs better for harder more consistant use? Or is that just the PR guys working on me?!

Not sure that i want to be the first to test out the HK ones

not sure about hard consistant braking but i'm sure there is a reason for wave disc other than the looks.
a fella i know who races a nc30 said he knows a few guys racing clubmen 600 cbrs and the like and they are using the HK and swear by them, and another guy i spoke to about them said that they are at such a good price that if they last a season he would throw them away to get another set so he was starting again with a brand new set of discs and pads....i bought a set of second hand standard discs as they are proven to work and cheaper than the HK ones, maybe next time i'll spend the bit more and go HK style

i'd stick with the nc30 forks, respring them and see how that goes, maybe after a race of two you'll wanna respring them but thats not a big job, clean and over haul your standard calipers with the braided lines you have and a set of straight discs and a good rear shock and thats you half way to getting around the track

start a new post in the graphics and style section to show us what you have :P

I have a set of stealth wavy discs and pads on ebay at the moment - they aren't the HK ones - and cost £300 originally including the rear one.

I found them really good - and an improvement over the std ones i had fitted originally.

Have a look and see if you are interested.

Plus I'll end them early for anyone off the 400gb site if the price is right!! ;)
