Re: NC30 problem :(
No harm in checking the rectifier. Only takes 2 minutes with a multimeter. Even if it isn't that you will know that its working ok.

Re: NC30 problem :(
what jets did you find in it?
what float heights did u set it to?
pilot screw settings?
to check your reg/rec start and put a pair of multimeters on the battery rev to 5000 you should have 13.5-15.5v charging the battery.....
i would check float heights and your float needles for wear and pilot screw settings.
oh and change your plugs as running incredibly rich will kill these pedantic nc30 plugs they foul easily
cheers Tim

Re: NC30 problem :(
Not sure what the jets were, they looked pretty original tho and had obviously been worked on before as the slot for the screwdriver had been opened out a bit. The float heights were 6.8mm as per the haynes manual. We couldnt see the pilot screws though, there is a pic in the haynes manual which makes it look like its buried deep in a hole in the side but there was nothing in any of the holes on my carbs!! And i very much doubt someone has removed all the pilot screws or it wouldnt idle as well as it does!! Plus there were no threads in the holes, so my dad said we were either looking at the wrong holes or they are a different model of carb that just has a predetermined jet size! Also the float needles were fine, and the plugs were pretty much new when i took them out about a week ago, a little bit of oil at the base of the thread but that was all!! Ill check the reg/rec in a bit!

Re: NC30 problem :(
Have you checked all four float needles are sealing properly when the float bowls are full? Petrol varnish can harden on the rubber tips stopping them from closing the valve fully.matt_vfr wrote:Kinda like its flooding... what the hell is wrong with it!!!I have no idea now! Does anyone have a clue whats wrong with it?? Weak spark perhaps? Is this a side effect of a dead reg/rec??? Cheers for any help!

Re: NC30 problem :(
Nah, checked all the needles when the carbs were apart and they didnt look too bad! Just had a thorough going over tonight though, checked the reg/rec and its fine, cleaned out the fuel tank breather and fuel filter/tap had a general rummage around the engine area, fitted the air nozzle correctly and checked the ignition coils... think i have found the problem!! :D :D :D The front 2 HT leads are giving a pretty good spark.. shoved a screwdriver in it and held it close to the frame and held the starter button and it was spitting blue sparks from all different points of the screwdriver, and when i put a spark plug in it was sparking well! The back 2 however, i had to hold the screwdriver about 1mm from the frame and got a proper weak crappy spark, and when using a proper plug (from a car, which is all i had spare, and therefore a larger gap) it wasnt sparking at all!!
Therefore im pretty sure the back ignition coil is dead... would explain why it floods and misfires when i give it a handful :D so im gonna get a new one from the scrappy round the corner and see if it makes a difference... fingers crossed!!

Re: NC30 problem :(
what size jets are fitted......????
i had a similar problem and the wrong sized jets were fitted....funnily enough it would idle fine and rev freely whilst sitting still but as soon as i would set off it would start to run like crap....
in my opinion its not a symptom of a dud reg rec but you could easily test it just to be sure... :D

Re: NC30 problem :(
Not sure what size jets are fitted, they looked like they could be the standard ones and its a VFR400RK, so its the early ones which had smaller jets... and yes, its starts and runs fine but as soon as i get on it and put it under load it doesnt work so well... though its really good if you are really light on the throttle and dont want to go past about 60/70mph
give it a handful and it runs like a bag of shite... but there is definitely something up with the ignition coil so ill try that... if that doesnt work i think im just about ready to give up and send it into a garage (ultimate sin!!!) but i think its pretty promising! Ill probs upgrade to some better jets at a later date but even the standard ones should work, just not go as fast surely... this is definitely not a problem with the jets if they are the originals as they are squeaky clean!

ultimate sin...tell me about it!!!
when i bought the nc30 i put it into the garage for the carbs to be cleaned and balanced and it came back with the same symptoms as you and it turned out the jets were the wrong size.....they fitted the wrong ones!!!!!

Re: NC30 problem :(
Lol, o dear, why is it so hard to find a decent garage these days... i get the feeling that if i ever sent it into a garage theyd just charge £300 for labour and tell me they couldnt find anything... everytime ive sent anything into a garage its come back with something else theyve broken and not told me about!! The worst time was when i had my car mot'd year before last and they told me it needed new pads and discs on the front... i was out with some mates and didnt have time to sort it myself and told them to fix it... everything was fine apart from the bill
but then about a month ago i started getting a scraping sound from the left hand side of the car... at the time i was working 7 days a week and didnt have much time to check it but when i did i found the metal backing to the plate scraping round the back of the disc and ripping chunks off it!! So, you say "Why didnt you check it when the brake light came on on the dash??" It didnt... they didnt fit the wear indicators!!! Fucktards!!!!!!
I will NEVER EVER use a formula 1 autocentre again!!! Anyway, rant over... bottom line is i always do the work on my vehicles unless i can absolutely help it... that way i know it gets done to the standard i expect, and i know how its been done!! However, a mate of mine has a couple of bikes and he says he went to one particular place to get a puncture repaired and hes been back ever since... so its an option if i really really need it!
P.s. I think we should start a sticky thread for decent garages that wont screw you over! :D
