R6 front wheel options

Post by nick »

Ok, after seeing a 3TJ with an R6 front end i've decided to have a go. Anyone know what options i have for front wheels that will fit the '99-02 5EB forks?

R6 :o

It's probably better to try and keep it all from the same of similar bikes that way you know the fork / spindle / triple clamps and brakes all work together and line up.

Its more a question of which other bikes use the same front wheel. I know the 4xv R1 uses the same but what about fazers etc.......

Probably the newer FZ ones but the old shape FZS uses the same brake discs as the 3TJ etc and 41mm dia forks so I don't think so.
Like I said befor fit the R6 one ... try to find a complete front end so you don't need to mess about with making things fit.

Hey nick,

I cant help you with exact specifics as to what fits what. You're right r1/r6 wheels are the same (early ones) with 22mm axles and bearings. 400 fzr ones are 15mm (if this is wrong please correct me this is all of the top of my head!) as far as i know the best you can do is 18mm using different bearings and there isnt enough meat on an r6 axle to machine it down.

Evil is right the best way to do it is with the whole front end much less of a head ache. It might not be straight in as i cant remember if the fork pitch is the same.

If your in the mood for a bit more of a challenge you can swap the yokes over, the r6 ones are a fair bit lighter, the stems need to be swapped, the bottom headrace bearings are the same but the fzr stem tapers in at the top so its not possible to get an r6 one in the head stock. You'll need a top hat spacer at the top as the top yoke stem hole is bigger than the fzr stem. Not to mention the offset difference in the two sets of yokes which may screw the handling...and breathe!

If you're a completist like me if you wanted near enough matched wheels, you could use a ducati 748-996 brembo wheel which takes 25mm bearings some nice captive spacers should sort that, and i have seen mention of the speedo drive ratio's on these ducati's matching the fzr ones, so its possible that you'd be able to use your original speedo to.

Now that's interesting because the Brembo wheel is a (heavier) copy of the Marchesini, my Bimota uses. They will be expensive from a Bimota but they were also used on the late Laverda's which are cheaper. the disc bolt spacing is the same as the Yamaha 3TJ too but I'm certain about the hub width.

Yeah its mentioned on madsi's site, as a quote from a guy with a gsxr front end, i have no idea if its true i have rough measurements for a marchesini duc wheel in one of my notebooks i'll have a rummage at some point.

I've got a set of r6 forks to try with a duc wheel next year anyhow, so i hopefully should find out.

Ta for all of your help on this one.

I'm really only looking for options that won't require any mods. R6/R1 front wheels are easy to find but not the cheapest, so anything thats a straight swap but cheaper is the plan.

So far i think its limited to;

R6 99-02
R1 98-02
Fazer thou' 02-03

Don't want to get into messing about with maching axles, spacers and different bearings etc........

Got the forks, blue spots and an axle, just need the wheel and discs

You might need to do a little work, either with wheel spacers if you use the 3TJ tripple clamps or with getting the steering stem to fit if you use the R6 front end complete

By that i guess the fork spacing is different?

I was hoping it would be the same as i've got a 5EB mudguard fitted to the 3TJ forks without any mods...
