Knocking feeling/noise

Post by scarface »

Started getting a knocking feeling through my footrests when I was touring my NC29 last weekend. I noticed the chain was loose with the milege I had done from the start of the trip. Anyway this started to get more noticable to the point I could also hear it also.

Anyway my spanners are on loan to someone just now so had to wait till I got the paddock stand into work for me to tighten the chain. Guess what the fecking knocking is still there :x :x

Noticed the back wheel is a bit loose so the bearings will need replaced. I'm hoping that the fecked bearing is what is causing the noise/feeling but I'm a bit worried it might be something else ie:- something a bit more expensive to fix????

From my experience that will be drive chain related. If it is now adjusted correctly one would wonder how much use it had, how noticeable the tight spot is, and how it is lube wise. All this would point to a chain at the end of its life. Or alternatively a misaligned wheel or over tighten rear axle nut.

As for the wheel being loose, if its the bearings then you should get free play either up and down or side to side as opposed to the axle being loose. A simple test if your not sure is to remove the wheel and spin the bearing by hand. A new bearing is perfectly smooth any notcheness and it will need replacing.

The final thing to check is the front sprocket. Is the sprocket nut attached, at the correct torque, is the tab washer in place, is there any lateral movement from the sprocket on the shaft? Most of these are obvious fixes apart from if the lack of one has caused further damage.
