fzr 400 clutch problem . .

Post by stevetwedd »

Hi,
Having problems with my fzr 400 3tj race bike. Well getting it off the line anyway.
Under normal conditions, ie : pulling away normal speed evrything is fine.
But when it comes to getting away quicker,
ie : race start, more revs. I cant feed the clutch it, it grabs then jumps forward and stalls.
Have checked clutch/friction plates and all seem fine.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Is it running the standard clutch ???
I think EBC make a heavy duty kit for them, or you could try just changing the springs for new heavy duty ones.

Check the adjuster on the push rod is set correctly, is the ball bearing still in there?. The basket could have a lot of ridges on it causing the plates to stick then suddenly jump free you can file them down a bit to smooth it out.
I had clutch slip problems with mine for ages then tried Barnet springs with good EBC plates & semi synth oil NOT fully synth & it's now ok. Have you got the 8 or 9 (sp) plate clutch? if your engine is tuned 65-70 BHP you might need the SP clutch as FZR clutch's are quite frail.

this is a standard Yamaha launch issue - can happen on everything from FZR's to Thundercats.

The race Thundercat I used to have (which was ex European supersport Zeelenberg and ex Brit supersport with Byrne, so screwed together properly) had this problem. The only cure which we inherited from Byrne's crew was to have the plates out after a few starts and rough them up using fine paper on a surface plate.

The clutch was always also rebuilt with the steels (which are punched out thus and have a rounded edge and a sharp edge) having the rounded edge facing the direction of engage travel (rounded side facing into the engine)

Although it felt like the basket might be notched, it was in good nick and it was solely plate condition that seemed to be the cause of it. Frankly a flipping nightmare. I eventually perfected a technique to get the the thing off the line by using almost no revs, disengaging the clutch totally in a short a distance as possible then firing it forwards solely on the throttle.

funny thing is I am now racing a GSXR1000 K2 and guess what that does off the start?..... exactly the flipping same! I'm hoping the cure for this is as simple as the ZX10 cushion plate I'm installing this weekend - basically the first steel in the clutch pack gets replaced with a sandwiched plate of steel/rubber/steel - instant cure is claimed. Not sure any such item exists for your clutch, but maybe worth a look.

good luck matey!
